Would you say that Asian or African Elephants have a better program at the moment? I don't know much about the captive African Elephant population in the United States, but the Asian Elephant population isn't the greatest, with the birth-death ratio being unfavorable.

They both aren't good. African has more potential currently. What's messed up we have countries north and south of us that are contributing more than we are in the states. And we hold a much larger population. I cant remember who posted it on here, and sorry I cant give credit too but not my words, the SSP focused way more in new blood instead of breeding what you have. I get we need more genetics but the potential was there 10 years ago and has depleted ever since. Politics and money were the culprits

Ok a bit of an update on this thread but as far as elephant reproduction goes

1.) Jayei at the Omahas Henry Doorly Zoo is pregnant and is due in August 2023. During this announcement in July 2022 the zoo confirmed that 6 African Elephant females are pregnant and due in August 2023. Jayei herself has a daughter Omma born in 2011 and I think Jayei is 30 or if not just a year or 2 younger than that if I’m not mistaken. The father of Jayeis baby she’s pregnant with is Callee

2.) Renee, a 43 year old female at the Toledo Zoo is also confirmed to be pregnant and is due in 2024. This will be Renee’s 3rd calf and she’s pregnant through artificial insemination.

3.) according the @Yazziel in the second episode of the latest season of Disney’s Season Of Magic, Nadirah is pregnant with her first calf and the father of her baby is Maclean.

According to @Kudu21 in the Dallas Thread, Mlilo of the Dallas Zoo welcomed a male calf February 27th. He weighs two hundred-ninety pounds. His sire is unknown at the moment. His half-brother Ajabu was born in 2016.

Just confirmed with a conservation interpreter at the Dallas Zoo that the father is indeed Tendaji! How exciting for the African Elephant population, and for Tendaji who’s now a first time father! This calf is also fairly genetically valuable and hopefully Zola falls pregnant soon or is already pregnant!

EDIT: also the zoo posted confirmation Tendaji is the father himself! I don’t know if he naturally conceived this calf or not but I do know he knows how to breed cause he bred with Zola in the fall of 2022.

The father of 43 year old Renee’s calf due in spring 2024 at the Toledo Zoo is first time father 14 year old Titan at the Sedgwick County Zoo. The zoo confirmed this in a Facebook post under their comments section and this will be Renee’s 3rd calf.

Also a note on the new calf born at Dallas to second time mom Mlilo and first time father Tendaji, the calf was naturally conceived.
