In Mexico the spectacled bear is kept at the following zoos (from what I can remember):

    Chapultepec

    Zacango

    Africam Safari

Is this individual BTS? I thought all the Andean bears were gone.

It seems a rather ageing and haphazard singletons population. Is the program somewhat stagnating?

I could be wrong but I think I read coincidentally on here in a thread about the tropical Bear programs that the AZA is trying to move forward with the Spectacled Bear SSP in lieu of the Sun Bear SSP.

It doesn’t look very large at the moment but they are having more successful breedings compared to the diminishing Sun Bear population. One example I’ve seen that shows dedication to the program is the Expedition Peru: Trek of the Andean Bear being a wonderful display for this specie. I don’t know where more founders are to be introduced from into the US population :/

    He is fairly recent.

You are correct. The Sun Bear program is a lost cause at this point. I think that the lack of breeding is largely due to the lack of exhibit space. I believe the same goes for the Sloth Bears.

Thank you for the update : an ageing population relying on a handful of couples to be perpetuated.

Wouldn't it makes sense to coordinate with EAZA and commit to one specific tropical bear only for the whole AZA area if exhibit space is the issue ?
In Europe, the three tropical bears species are also struggling with space and for the Malayan sun bear, poor breeding results as well even if things seems to get better recently with Arnhem and Chester success.
I am not advocting for one specific specie but in my eyes, it would make sense that AZA focus on sloth bear, eventually supplied with young European stock, while EAZA would work more on Andean bear and sun bear.

By advance, sorry if I am polluting with off-topic discussion.

Diamond isn't dead yet. The Racine Zoo announced today on Instagram he underwent surgery for cancer and "his prognosis looks great!"

Beardsley is working on a big new exhibit and I would expect they will bring in a breeding pair. My guess would be that at least one that they bring in would be the one born at San Diego in 2020. Anyone have any guesses on which ones they might bring in

I don't believe it is exactly known who will be transferred there yet. Agapito is a great guess. I don't know the quality of the current exhibits, so they may move individuals to a better exhibit.

There are a lot of older bears that are excluded from the breeding program.

Chapultepec zoo still has the elder female bear born at Leipzig zoo. Her two sons are at Zacango zoo. I have seen all recently. I can find no información on the Africam safari bear, which was most líkely also the son of the Leipzig female and the male from Jersey, Charlie, who resided at Chapultepec and is now deceased.
