As a kid, the fact Lincoln Park and Brookfield Zoo were at the time both Andean bear holders made me assume they were a more common species, it's interesting to see the true size of the population and it's good they are having success. Despite their presence at both zoos for many years and many visits I never saw one except one's behind as it went inside.

    Lovely news!

Interesting note, apparently they were supposed to try and breed Quito to Billie Jean first, and then breed him to Brienne if it didn't work out with Billie Jean. Billie Jean was born in 2005, so maybe it is too late for her to have any more cubs?

Not cancer, polymetra (aka an infection of the uterus), two very different things. Regardless, the fact that she survived the infection and they were able to treat it while keeping her intact are miraculous enough. However unfortunately her breeding days are more than likely done at this point. She’s extremely well represented genetically, but still, always sad to lose a good breeding female to something like that.

Excellent news about Brianne though! I have no doubt her and Quito will produce many lovely cubs together in the years to come.

Alfred one of two Andean bears that recently arrived at the Beardsley Zoo was humanely euthanized due to extreme old age after a medical exam showed he was in kidney failure.

Where was this announced? As a Cleveland resident that's quite sad to hear

The National Zoo’s twin cubs (2:0) have been named Sean and Ian! Possible pun on “Andean” there with “and Ian?” We may never know!

Does anyone know what happened to the bears Mayni (born at National Zoo in 2014) and Bernardo (born at National Zoo in 2010?)

I know Bernardo’s twin sister Chaska is currently at the Salisbury Zoo, and Mayni’s twin Muniri is at the Nashville Zoo. Any word on what happened to his brother?

Mayni was renamed Holt, and passed away a few years after his transfer to Nashville, sadly.

Oh, I read about Holt’s death but didn’t realize that was the same bear! I wonder why he was renamed and if it was in honor of a donor or something. His original name, Mayni, was chosen in a naming contest.

Bernardo initially went to Tulsa Zoo. He was then exported to Chester Zoo in 2014

Billie Jean has been retired to the Cape May County Zoo:

South American bear comes to Cape May County Zoo

The Cape May County Zoo has received a new bear from the National Zoo in Washington, D.C.

Billie Jean, a 17-year-old spectacled bear, arrived at the zoo May 8, county officials said Wednesday in a news release.
