The purpose of this thread is to publish the current population of Asian elephants in North America, and to collaborate with the threads North American Asian Elephant Institutions and North American Asian Elephant Reproduction.

In North America, there are currently 229 (46.183) Asian elephants as of January 31, 2018. Of those 229 Asian elephants, 133 (30.103) elephants reside at accredited facilities while 96 (16.80) elephants reside at non accredited facilities such as private institutions and circuses. The information was collected through the following sources:

Hopefully this thread will enable others to learn about the North American Asian elephant population, to report any changes or inaccuracies about the information posted, and to develop a detailed report of Asian elephants in North America.

Oh wow, great work! This can’t have been an easy job! It must have taken you forever!

I can only dream that I will be able to find the sources to do the same for sun bears in North America at some point.

The purpose of this comment is to propose the transfer and relocation of Asian elephants within North America to enable institutions to either develop a matriarchal herd, to provide other institutions with additional elephants, or to retire older elephants to specialized facilities or sanctuaries.

With 229 (46.183) Asian elephants in North America, there a limited number of accredited and non accredited institutions that can accommodate Asian elephants. Of those institutions, many possess the adequate standards for the care and husbandry of Asian elephants while others keep elephants in conditions that are substandard. Here are the changes made by the recommendations of transferring or relocating Asian elephants to other institutions. In the same process as the first post, the institutions are organized by accredited institutions then non accredited institutions. Within those categories the institutions are organized by country, then state, then city in alphabetical order.

    Institution - Location
0.0 Name (Father x Mother) Date of Birth (Location)* (* Traveling Breeding Bull)
    Explanation

African Lion Safari - Cambridge, Ontario, Canada

1.0 Rex 1968-00-00 (Oklahoma City Zoo)
1.0 Obert (Buke x Isa) 2003-08-20 (Endangered Ark Foundation)
0.1 Natasha (Tusko x Whimpy) 1994-02-27 (African Lion Safari)
0.1 Opal (Rex x Natasha) 2005-11-04 (African Lion Safari)
0.1 Nellie (Johnson x Natasha) 2013-08-02 (African Lion Safari)
0.1 Anna May (Johnson x Opal) 2015-05-04 (African Lion Safari)
0.1 Rose (Johnson x Natasha) 2016-02-28 (African Lion Safari)
0.1 Lilly (Motek x Warda) 1985-01-31 (African Lion Safari)
0.1 Phoebe (Motek x Warda) 1987-05-15 (Columbus Zoo)
0.1 Piccolina (Alexander x Lilly) 1994-12-11 (African Lion Safari)
0.1 Hannah (Johnson x Lilly) 2014-10-19 (African Lion Safari)
0.1 Emily (Rex x Kitty) 2006-04-23 (African Lion Safari)
0.1 Gigi (George x Emily) 2015-02-24 (African Lion Safari)

0.1 Maggie 1968-00-00 (African Lion Safari)
1.0 Jake (Rex x Natasha) 2009-11-02 (African Lion Safari)

By transferring Rex and Obert to African Lion Safari that would enable Rex to breed with Natasha and Obert to breed with Opal. By transferring Phoebe to African Lion Safari that would enable Phoebe to reunite with her sister Lilly. Further, that would enable the Columbus Zoo to develop their breeding program.

Phoenix Zoo - Phoenix, Arizona, USA

    0.1 Reba 1970-00-00 (Phoenix Zoo)
    0.1 Sheena 1971-00-00 (Phoenix Zoo)

By transferring Methai to the Phoenix Zoo that would enable Methai to reunite with Indu. Further, that would enable the Phoenix Zoo to expand their herd of elephants and the Houston Zoo to develop their breeding program.

Los Angeles Zoo - Los Angeles, California, USA
0.1 Jewel 1964-00-00 (Los Angeles Zoo)

By transferring Ruth, Emily, Maxine, Patty, Happy, Donna, Pearl, Sri, Jothi, and Surapa to Elephant Refuge North America that would enable the sanctuary to provide retirement to these elephants and enhance the social structure of these elephants.

Ultimately, the transfer and relocation of Asian elephants within North America will enable the reproduction of Asian elephants to become successful, the retirement of older elephants to sanctuaries or institutions for specialized care, and the development of matriarchal and bachelor herds to promote naturalistic social structures. As for the thought process that went into these recommendations, the threads North American Asian Elephant Reproduction and North American Asian Elephant Institutions examine the information in further detail.

I have thought about posting a thread for the North American African Elephant population but as for breeding recommendations, I would still need to do further research.

Primarily, my research has been the North American Asian & African Elephant population but I have also taken an interest in the European Asian Elephant population, the Australian Asian Elephant population, the North American Polar Bear population, the Captive Walrus population, and the Captive Sumatran Rhino population.

Thank you to everyone for the positive comments and feedback.

I too love Billy from LA and hope his wildborn genepool can be utilized in the US. However, I don't believe he has ever sired a calf. He's not listed as a neutered male in the studbook, but I've wondered occasionally if the TAG knows something the rest of us don't know about him. It's been 8 years since LA's absolutely incredible new exhibit opened, and during this time, all of the breeding institutions you mention in your other thread have been supplemented to include one or more breeding age females and a now-proven male. With this incredible exhibit, it seems not providing LA with a viable mate for Billy can't be sheer oversight. At all the breeding facilities, plans were put in place to enable breeding--even within 18 months for Oregon after the sudden loss of Tusko. Yet there seems to have been no effort to bring Billy a mate or send him somewhere where one awaits, like Oregon. I wonder if there is something preventing Billy from being a viable breeder.

If the Los Angeles Zoo is having difficulty acquiring a breeding age female, the Woodland Park Zoo was in the same situation a few years ago. The Woodland Park Zoo was searching for a breeding age female to grow their herd of elephants and to reestablish their breeding program but was unsuccessful. Because of this, the Woodland Park Zoo decided to phase out their elephant program and relocate their remaining two elephants to another institution. The Los Angeles Zoo has the potential to develop a matriarchal herd but given the current circumstances, it would be in the best interest of the Los Angeles Zoo to acquire post reproductive elephants from institutions that should or have intentions on phasing their elephants.

I’m wondering the same thing too. At 33 years old, Billy should be in the prime of his reproductive years despite his lack of breeding. Further, his genetics are extremely valuable to the population yet Billy has never had the opportunity to reproduce. Based on these attributes alone, Billy is an ideal breeding candidate. There must be some unknown reason for the Los Angeles Zoo to keep Billy rather than transfer him to another institution for breeding.

Why is LA keeping him? Sheer stubbornness and the wish to prove a point.

    Is he viable? Yes.

Is LA/the SSP doing anything reproductively with him? I do have some knowledge of what's going on, but it's not my place to speak publicly about it, however I will say that like many bulls in NA, he is trained for semen collection.

@EsserWarrior if you have the opportunity, could you ask the elephant staff at the Cincinnati Zoo the following questions:

Are attempts still being made to breed Jati and Sabu?
Is Jati post reproductive due to lack of reproduction?
Are there any plans to renovate the elephant facility?
Will the renovations include enlarging the outdoor enclosures and revamping the indoor space?
