North American AZA Southern White Rhino Population

Great news! Mom is experienced mom Bloom, this is her first male calf after 4 girls. Sire is fourth time dad Chitabe. Hopefully some of the other girls in the crash are pregnant too, only Bloom and her daughter Anna have reproduced in the last couple years at LCS. Actually 5.4.1 calves have been born this year.

Victoria and Amani are not recommended to breed for the time being. Wallis, Nikita, Helene, and Livia are all recommended to breed with J Gregory so there is a good chance some of them are pregnant. Kiazi may be pregnant and due in 2022, since her son Arthur was hand-raised she could’ve bred with J Gregory soon after his birth.

The male calf at the Tulsa Zoo has now been given the name Hodari (Ha-dar-ee).

 

Toronto's calf (well not a calf anymore), Theo, left for Vancouver in late November so he should already be well into quarantine.

 

Another calf is on the ground! With this birth, there have now been 11 (5.4.2) births in the population this year!

0.1 Evey gave birth to her fourth calf today at the Rolling Hills Zoo. The calf was conceived while she was at the Wilds so the sire is either 1.0 Roscoe or 1.0 Kengele but it's probably Kengele. The gender of the newborn is unknown as of now but the calf is healthy and doing great!

I'm assuming that Henry Vilas is permanently a housing facility now? I don't think they have the facilities to breed anyone. (Henry Vilas is basically a housing zoo. Not a breeding one.)

 

You are correct, Henry Vilas only has a single young male at the moment and there are no plans to receive a female for breeding or to send him out. They are simply a bachelor male holding facility for the time being.

 

Harmon genetics are extremely abundant in the genepool, so I’m not surprised. They’d use to breed their old pair, I believe. I wouldn’t mind seeing a companion arrive to keep Harmon company. He’s such a sweet boy.
I have videos of me shouting his name at him and him walking over to stare at me. He’s my favorite little man.

 

As @Austin the Sengi posted on the DAK thread Disney Orlando animal kingdom has had another southern white rhino calf born and after two males this time its a little girl

 

A couple of updates!

1.0 Max, 0.1 Laptop, and 0.1 Ajabu from Birmingham Zoo were all transferred to a private facility recently, probably Rum Creek or White Oak. The zoo is switching to the Black Rhino SSP and will be receiving a pair next spring.

The sire of this calf is indeed Kengele and the little one is male!

Kenegle sure does sire a lot of males calves

 

Not really, it's only his third male calf. He has 3 daughters and 3 sons now, so it's pretty equal so far. However, I will say there is a bit of a male bias in births within this population but many other species including GOHR, Black rhino, okapi, and giraffe have experienced this as well. Unfortunately, it becomes very hard for many facilities to place tons of bachelor males, especially the ones that aren't very genetically valuable.

January 2022 Update:

To start off, since Erie Zoo, Chahinkapa Zoo, and Safari West all recently lost their AZA accreditations, the rhinos at these facilites are no longer part of the AZA/SSP population and have been excluded from this list.

Twelve (6.6) calves were born in this population this year to my knowledge which is pretty similar to the number of calves born in past years. An additional seven (3.3.1) calves were born at White Oak Conservation Center which is an AZA certified facility, however there is not much I could find about these calves other than their genders.

0.1 Babe passed away on November 9th, 2021 at Cameron Park Zoo at the age of 49 due to issues associated with old age.

Fourteen (10.4) rhinos were transferred in the population to my knowledge. A lot of surplus rhinos (especially males) were moved out of the AZA/SSP population in 2021.

#1241 Maoto was transferred to Wildlife World Zoo in Phoenix. They plan to breed him to their wildcaught female imports from South Africa.

Regarding Maoto, I did know he was sent to Wildlife World but looks like I left that out in my post on accident

 

Rum Creek imported 1.9 individuals from Namibia (a.o. Kunene Region).

There should also be a deal involving Safari West.

 

According to the Los Angeles Zoo's Animal Transaction Report, the females were loaned to African Rhino Protection Initiative in Bellevue, Texas. I would assume Max was also transferred to Bellevue.

It is worth noting that both females are now well into their 20's (one born 1992 and the other in 2000 both at Fossil Rim) and might now no longer be considered high hopes for any succesful breeding.
