There are lots of plans for breeding and transfers, so we'll just have to see what happens. :p

Makasi and Kalli are Loretta's (from the San Diego Zoo) offspring. I would be interested in hearing where you got the information that they weren't.

Historically there is also only one Loretta in the US bonobo population - so there shouldn't be any doubt who their mother is!

Back when I was making the list I wasn't sure if it was the Loretta that was in Europe or the one un the U.S., haha. I just forgot to edit that off the list.

Maybe I was thinking about a different error I had where I had it listed as "Not [Female Name]" one time and someone corrected me. I clearly had some confusion from back when I made the list. Everyone makes mistakes. :p

Very interesting indeed to read that the Morelia zoo bonobos were both originally wild caught ( presumably in the Congo ?).

I am certain they are no longer of breeding age (and this is said in hindsight) but given their valuable genes perhaps they should have been more actively managed as part of a breeding programe a couple of decades ago ?

KABONGO was born in 1979, WAMBA in 1980, they had offspring two times, but only one male survived. He was called MAMBO and had been shipped to Columbus Zoo. There he sired two babies, but unfortunately died in 2006.

Do Bonobos become sterile with age? I assume they'd be able to reproduce until death, it just got more risky the older they got.

Female become sterile of age with 40-45 years, sometimes ealier, male are able to breed up to high age.

The oldest female, who gave birth to a healthy baby, was LOREL (*1969) in Jacksonville in 2012.

Female bonobos go through menopause just like human females do. They also get human birth control pills when they don't have a breeding recommendation. Loretta at the SDZ had a breeding recommendation when she was 41 but the pairing of Vic and Loretta never worked out. It could be that she was 41 and he was 14 and had never sired.

Very good to hear that the zoo did somehow contribute to the ex situ conservation of bonobos through expanding the gene pool via mambo.Still its a little sad that Bongo and Wamba were originally wild caught individuals.

I wonder what the circumstances of this were?

Was the importation of wild caught bonobos a common practice for zoos in the late 70's and 80's?

I am very excited for Kesi. I didn't think it was going to happen for her. It has been 5 years since the SSP transfer. No pregnancies happened at the San Diego Zoo because of the transfer.

According to Milwaukee's Head Bonobo Keeper, Cincinnati and Milwaukee were the only facilities recommended to have offspring, but Milwaukee hasn't attempted to breed yet, as they want to get through the pandemic first.

This isn't news, but it something I found interesting while looking at some bonobo content today.

Johari, Fort Worth Zoo's matriarch, is exceptionally large for female bonobos, weighing in at 115 pounds. Their keeper also mentioned that she tends to be aggressive towards Kevin and Victor. Do any of Johari's relatives exceed standard size in bonobos or act aggressively towards males?
