North American Bonobo Population

I think there needs to be a zoo that has non breeding bonobos. I don't know if there is one currently.

 

Fort Worth, Memphis, San Diego, and ACCI are the closest things to holding facilities that the SSP has right now. Hopefully, ACCI will be having some offspring within the next few years!

 

Memphis has not had a breeding male since Mofana died in 2014. They just have females with their male offspring. San Diego has 2 males capable of breeding, Vic and Makasi.

 

I'm so glad to here Elema and Suakri are doing well! I miss them here at the Columbus Zoo.

 

They would need additional holders and capacity. Surprised not more zoos are interested in participating with these highly intelligent great apes with interesting social structure and behaviour.

 

I think it's because facilities assume the bonobos will sit there and have sex all day. You'd be surprised by how many people think that's all they do.

 

Well, chimpansees are murderous cantankerous mischiefs, so I do not see the issue!
Pffft, they must be full on I...s then ... oh, my how ignorant them flocks.... yawn!

 

Makanza from Jacksonville will not be transferred to the ACCI.

 

And what is going to happen with ELIKYA at the ACCI without an anrelated male?

 

It was also recommended that he breed with Clara as well. Sadly it doesn't look like much breeding will be happening in the next few years.

 

The best I could think of is possibly Woodland Park, if they could possibly integrate Jumoke the gorilla into the gorilla family troop, or send her to a retirement facility (rather than bringing a male and two females) to live her. Then, the bonobos can live in the East Exhibit (and possibly rotate with the gorillas).

 

Columbus - 0.1 Lady was recently euthanized after suffering from heart disease: Columbus Zoo and Aquarium Mourns Loss of Bonobo, "Lady"

 

Horrible news Lady is succeeded by her four children: Max II, Jo-T, Ricky, and Tamia. She also has 6 grandchildren: Lukuru, Noelle, Noki-Noki, Pabu, Nora-Jan, and Hanna. She also has one great-grandchild: Bokati.

 

That is very sad. She is one of the last wild-born bonobos left in the United States. Only Jimmy and Susie are left. They are both at the Columbus Zoo.

 

Laura the oldest bonobo in the United States was euthanized. She was 55 years old. Milwaukee County Zoo

 

Absolutely heartbreaking news! Laura was one of my favorites.

 

Bonobos in the US — Ape Initiative

According to the ACCI - which seems to be accurate, as Laura, who just recently passed, is already taken off the list - these changes have been made:

• Laney has been transferred from Jacksonville to Memphis
• Lukuru from Jacksonville has passed away

 

Yes, Laney was transferred in July of 2022 and Lukuru passed away from a respiratory infection in October of 2021.
