North American Cheetah Population

The purpose of this thread is to document all births, deaths, and transfers of cheetahs in North America. This population is pretty healthy, genetically speaking, and has benefitted from numerous South African imports over the years. Most of the breeding is done at facilities that are a part of the AZA/SSP's Breeding Center Coalition (BCC) which are Fossil Rim, White Oak, The Wilds, Cincinnati, SCBI, SDZSP, Saint Louis, Wildlife Safari, and Omaha/Simmons Wildlife Safari Park. There are also some non-AZA breeding giants like Tanganyika and Metro Richmond which are the main distributors of animals to smaller non-AZA and roadside zoos. There are roughly 533 (259.267.7) cheetahs in North America kept at a total of 86 facilities (4 in Canada) and 3 litters have been born in 2022 thus far, a litter of 3 at Toronto and two litters at Tanganyika. This is a rough estimate as there's a good chance several of the older animals have died and more cubs have been born at places like Metro Richmond, Tanganyika, White Oak, etc., but haven't been announced. Since there are numerous roadside and non-AZA zoos and many off-site AZA breeding centers that hold this species, it's pretty difficult to track all these individuals down. My main source for this was the 2020 International studbook that just came out last month, and I also received some help from ZooChat's resident cheetah expert (@TinoPup) which I'm also very grateful for! Also, to see some zoos with 30+ cheetahs is crazy. The North American population seems to be doing extremely well.

 

I know that Safari Wild animal park in Como, Mississippi holds cheetahs.

 

This is a wonderful list, I appreciate you all that made it happen especially to @IndianRhino and @TinoPup! I’m not too keen on cheetahs so if anyone can enlighten me, I’d greatly appreciate it! Does the population within North America compromise entirely of South African cheetahs or perhaps are there some of unknown subspecie/pedigree? Is this considered a Green SSP due to the sheer size of the population? I’d love to be educated and appreciate the help!

To be honest, I don't have much knowledge about this either but I'll try and answer your questions! A vast majority of the population descends from imported cheetahs that were captive-bred in various South African private breeders. However, yes, there are some with unknown parentage and pedigree, these are mostly in private and roadside zoos though. I do not know if it is considered a Green SSP but I would assume so because, like you said, the population is quite large, however, it should be noted that a lot of these animals are kept at non AZA zoos. I'm sure Tino will have more information about all of this though!

Yes, it's great to see! This list took me a whole month to make and review compared to the 4-5 days it takes for the majority of the others. The facilities that are a part of the BCC have done a fantastic job breeding these animals in the last several decades. Not to mention, non-AZA facilities like Tanganyika and Metro Richmond that have gone above and beyond with this species. It's rather shocking to see that Metro Richmond has around 40 cheetahs currently... the most in the country!

 

It's nice that Richmond and Tanganyika are having so much success, but they're sending cats to a lot of less than great places, and it's only going to continue to get worse. As much as I love the species, the US is becoming over-saturated, and there's only so many places for the cubs to continue to go. Seeing the species turn in to what tigers and lions have become would be heartbreaking.

I don't think that's likely to happen with American animals. Several breeding centers in southern africa have 100+ cats and have been exporting them all over the world.

A vast majority of the population descends from imported cheetahs that were captive-bred in various South African private breeders. However, yes, there are some with unknown parentage and pedigree, these are mostly in private and roadside zoos though.

Australasia has historically imported a number from there too, as well as Cango Wildlife Ranch. We’ve therefore been lucky to receive a number of founders versus populations of other captive felids in the region. It appears it’s the same for North America.

 

I presume on gut feeling that pretty much a great deal of all captive cheetah save for the selected few and rescued population from NE Africa in European zoos also originate by and large from the captive-breeding centers in South Africa or imports from non-releaseable ones ex Namibia and other southern African range states.
