North American Chimpanzee Population

The AZA SSP is in charge of the genetic management across AZA-accredited facilities. I don't believe that they have subspecific management in North America, I think they may all just be generic individuals. If I had to guess, the North American population is too intermixed to be unmixed back into subspecific groups.

The list is currently being worked on. It is difficult to find information on everyone that houses them due to their popularity in private trade.

This document has been made in an attempt to record all chimpanzees in the United States and Canada. It will be updated according to any press releases from zoos that are currently in possession of chimpanzees, or are working on acquiring chimpanzees. Any deaths, births, or transfers may be posted in the comments on the thread. The lineage of the chimpanzees will also be recorded if available.

What does the asterisk next to some of the names for?

 

They represent the dominant male in those groups. I had descriptions of the troop dynamics underneath the facilities originally, but I got rid of them. I ended up not marking the dominant male for all of the facilities.

 

Leah at Oregon Zoo has died. Leah was the youngest of their geriatric troop, reducing the zoo’s population to 1.2 (including her elder sister, Delilah):

Unfortunately she subsequently passed away, I believe in July 2020 based on the female chimpanzee death noted in the LA Zoo Animal Transactions covering that month.

We at OKC Zoo have Cindy listed as wild caught from DRC in Zims, though I have no paperwork to verify

 

The Los Angeles Zoo has two additional males now: Mshindi (from Dallas Zoo) and Pu'iwa (from Honolulu Zoo).

One other update to the population noted above: Jerrard passed away at the Los Angeles Zoo on 3/22/20:

New in the Zoo

 

It's really unusual to hear of a zoo introducing two males into a troop of this size (14 chimps), which already contains adult males.

It sounds like the introductions are progressing well with the adult incoming male being submissive; and the adolescent incoming male being more play focused than hierarchy focused, surely assisting with the introduction process.

Ultimately Mshindi will be good company for Oliver and Johari (who are a year younger) and give the troop some succession going forward.

 

A healthy female infant was born on Friday, April 22nd to 37-year old mom Binti at Zoo Knoxville. The sire of the baby has not yet been confirmed.

European zoo population of chimpanzees was found to have majority of individuals of pure subspecies, although they were bred just as freely as in the America. There is also now a genetic panel developed for finding the subspecies of zoo and confiscated chimps.

Chimpanzees are endangered and their status in the wild is quickly worsening, so AZA zoos should make effort to make their chimp population of conservation value, not just display / education. Who knows how situation of wild chimps in Africa will change in 20 or 50 years in future?

Actually, many zoos might unknowingly hold pure subspecies chimps because old trade routes could lead to one locality. And relatively recent trade in chimps may be good news for conservation of pure subspecies, because wild caught chimps will be pure subspecies.

Sad news considering her age (11 years), but Nori was diagnosed with epilepsy at age five and had been suffering from ill health for many years.
