Very exciting news! Gus and Boipelo at Dallas have welcomed a healthy calf on October 30th.

The fifth hippo birth in North America in sixteen months! Gus siring a calf at just 4 years of age is incredible! This new calf is the cousin of Fiona and Fritz at the Cincinnati Zoo.

Cincinnati's Tucker and Fiona have recently been seen breeding. No pregnancy has officially been confirmed, but it is most likely that Fiona is pregnant. Hopefully despite Fiona weighing 2,100 pounds and born 2 months premature, it is hopeful that the pregnancy will go well. If the breeding was successful (which is quite likely), then we can expect a hippo baby around June-July of 2023.

They've been seen mating and Fiona is on contraception - so it's not really a 'likely' chance, but there still is somewhat a chance she is pregnant.

If the pregnancy does go well though, we'll see issues surrounding space, so I hope she isn't pregnant. Especially due to her small size, a pregnancy and then a birth could potentially be very dangerous.

Stop. You have absolutely no way of knowing if she is pregnant or not, the zoo couldn't even tell this early if she was. Acting like you know what's going on, and that she is pregnant, benefits no one.

There are some incomplete updates from January 2023 that I noticed when I was looking at hipposworld.de today and affect the current population.

    - Fort Worth Zoo now has just two cows. hipposworld.de/halterdetails4.php?ISBN1=X0222
    - The Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo now keeps one cow, and previously the only known living animal there was a bull. hipposworld.de/halterdetails4.php?ISBN1=X0245
    - The Greater Vancouver Zoo has two cows (no bull).

No, Vancouver absolutely has a male/female pair. It’s a full sibling pair originally born at Granby in Quebec. I remember seeing the male, Haben, as a tiny juvenile during his brief stay in Calgary in ‘05-‘06.

At Aggieland Safari in Bryan, Texas, they have a 1:0 Nile Hippo named "Howdy"
He arrived in April 2019, right around when the park opened.
He is probably "Howdi", who was born to Norman and Matilda at Oklahoma City Zoo on 8/24/76, then moved to Oakland a few months later.

That is likely true, because in 2019, they celebrated "Howdy Week" from August 18th until September 2nd, so it makes sense that his birthday is somewhere around the middle of it.
Here is a link that mentioned him at the park just two weeks ago:

Would probably be Howdi who's living out his retirement years there. ;)

I have solved one of the mysteries that was talked about last year on this thread and remained unanswered since. With these two articles, I found that Gulf Breeze Zoo's Kiboko and Cleopatra are the parents of 1:0 Tank at the Capital of Texas Zoo. Tank's birth date has been confirmed as August 22nd, 2010.

Some extremely sad news to announce:
Fifty-year-old Pudgie (Uebi x Durka) has sadly passed away at Sedgwick County Zoo yesterday due to aging health issues. In addition, the zoo says that once fifty-one-year-old Sweetie Pie, Pudgie's companion for the last half-century(!) passes, the zoo will not bring any more Nile Hippos to the zoo, as they are not in the zoo's master plan. In addition, Sweetie Pie is also receiving geriatric specialized care.

Quick note, she was renamed from Haben to Habey.*

I want to ask a few questions. Will Zoo Granby Coumba leave the zoo, he is now 7 years old, and he is nearly sexually mature. Will Polita and Kiboko breed again. It has been years. What is the capacity of the hippo pool in Granby? Like how many adults they can hold.
