Here is a list of all the Indian Rhinos in North America, there are some others in private facilities such as White Oak and Rum Creek that are not listed here. If anyone knows any information on the Indian Rhinos at these facilities, please let me know! There is a total of 66 (36.30) known Indian Rhinos in 29 different facilities in North America, and one known pregnancy (Tashi at Buffalo). There has been one male calf born so far this year (at San Diego Zoo Safari Park). And once again, please let me know if you have any information on the rhinos at Rum Creek and White Oak, or if I am missing any other zoos or rhinos!

Since 2000. They started with"Giirja, a bull that was transferred from the San Diego WAP to Rim Creek in that year. In 2004, two cows arrived from San Diego, the first offspring of the San Diego WAP, "Gainda" born in 1978, who came already pregant to Florida in May 2004 and died four months after giving birth, and her 17-year-old half-sister "Goalpara".

That's unfortunate that Ellah has passed. And, thank you so much for the White Oak population list! :) That would mean there are a total of 73 (37.36) known Indian rhinos in North America.

Yes, the one in Rockton Canada.

Thank you so much for all that info! Do you know anything about their current population?

Yes, and before none too long Rum Creek will probably hit the 25 GOHR mark. The ranch is the biggest non AZA net contributor to the GOHR breeding program. Just so you know the value of private breeding initiatives.

Wow, almost 25! That's impressive, wish they were more transparent about their breeding and calves though.

To be fair: I think they are transparent as far as the AZA community is concerned!

I would further underline their contribution to conservation breeding ex situ is a quite extra-ordinary and the various breeding group sizes of endangered species are sometimes huge (f.i. banteng is well over 300 ..., not even speaking of pygmy hippo or bongo). They also hold active membership in the ZAA organisation.

So, I really do not see what reasons there could be to complain about. Sure, us Zoochatters, are kept in the dark, but it is no obligation on Rum Creek and its owner to hit the limelight with the general public now. For what it is worth, Rum Creek and the Texas ranch they hold is a private facility and you would be a lucky charmer ever to be invited up there!

Thats so amazing that a private holder can hold that many Indian rhino, I just wonder if they had imported some to have that many being held?. Its great to see a real holder of so many of the rarer species like Bongo and Pygmy Hippos it would be nice to know a little more

AZA as an organisation has been struggling for a long time to provide sufficient spaces for targeted species and in cases where a phase out exists invariably the private sector gets to soak up and absorb the species being sent "elsewhere".

In the case of Rum Creek, they imported white rhino from South Africa themselves (there current number should be well over 50+), and they have very good keeping and curatorial management staff at hand to manage the properties quite comfortably.

Over the years their operation as an independent large scale conservation breeding facility intensified to the level that they are now a supporting partner in good standing within the AZA. They are as yet not part of C2S2 - conglomerate of large open range conservation breeding facilities with a focus on large animal groups of selected wildlife (a.o. The Wilds, White Oak, Fossil Rim are among those and the recent inclusion of St. Louis and others with their off site facilities).

When did Saint Louis join C2S2? There is nothing on their website or on C2S2. The only thing I could find was St Louis receiving funding from USFWS via C2S2 for their new Red Wolf complex.

Also, Suru at Miami and Anna at Bronx Zoo were recently transferred to the Wilds; Fitzgerald is at Montgomery Zoo

Do you have a source for this? Not that I don’t believe you, I’d just like to know where you got the info.

Rolling Hills is likely not continuing with Indian rhino. The only other rhino left is a southern white named Uzazi.
