Does anyone know why Moshi from Phoenix zoo(grand daughter of Michael) was transferred out of the SSP?

Ellen Trout - 0.1 “Luna” has arrived from the Phoenix Zoo to breed with 1.0 “Kellen” once she’s old enough. Ellen Trout now has 1.2 Masai Giraffes and Phoenix has 1.2 as well.

Sacramento - it appears 0.1 “Shani” is no longer pregnant, however it is unclear whether she had a false pregnancy or if she miscarried. Her vets are currently working to determine what happened through hormone tests.

 

The zoo has further confirmed this via an email - however still appears to be no indication of what happened. Currently they see no health issues or other potential concerns via veterinary monitoring, which is good.

 

January 2023 Update

Summary of Events:
We had quite a few calves born in 2022 - a total of 8.4 calves were born this year but unfortunately, only 5.2 calves are still surviving.

• A male calf was born at San Diego Zoo Safari Park to parents, "Gowon", and "Zindzhi", but he unfortunately passed away just a few days later.
• A male calf, "Raymie", was born on January 19th to parents, "Michael", and "Adia" at Santa Barbara Zoo, he is their second male calf together.
• A female calf, "Luna", was born on February 7th at Phoenix Zoo to parents, "Miguu", and "Sunshine", she is their third female calf together.
• A male calf, "Matumaini", was born on February 24th to parents, "Kiko", and "Mstari" at Toronto Zoo, he is their second calf together.
• A male calf was born on April 8th at Los Angeles Zoo to parents, "Philip", and "Zainabu". He is their fourth calf together, and unfortunately I have not been able to determine what his name is quite yet.
• A male calf, "Olmsted" was born on April 28th, to first-time parents, "Parker" and "Iggy" at Seneca Park Zoo
• A stillborn female calf was born on May 9th to first-time mom, "Mara" and sire, "Gowon" at San Diego Zoo Safari Park.
• A stillborn male calf was born on June 22nd to first-time parents, "Baridi", and "Kianga" at Louisville Zoo.
• A male calf was born at Seneca Park Zoo to first-time mom, "Kipenzi", and sire, "Parker" on July 12th, but he was euthanized due to joint issues less than 3 weeks after birth.
• A stillborn female calf was born on July 27th to experienced parents, "Michael" and "Audrey" at Santa Barbara Zoo.
• A male calf, "Charlie" was born on August 31st to parents, "Zuri" and "Enzi" at Columbus Zoo.
• A female calf, "Tisa" was born on September 9th at Virginia Zoo to experienced parents, "Billy" and "Imara".

Besides the aforementioned deaths of newborn calves, we lost 1.2 Masai giraffes in 2022:

• 21-year-old, "Johari" passed away on January 8th, 2022 at Brevard Zoo after going into cardiac arrest. She had 9 calves throughout her lifetime and has many direct descendants and also many relatives through her many siblings and half-siblings.
• 3-year-old, "Rowan" was euthanized on April 14th, 2022 at the Nashville Zoo due to a severe leg injury. He leaves behind multiple brothers, half-brothers, and their offspring.
• 11-year-old, "Cece" passed away sometime in October 2022 at the Cincinnati Zoo. She leaves behind 1.1 offspring and several other relatives.

Quite a few transfers occurred in 2022, mainly for breeding purposes, so we can expect to see many more calves being born this year and in years ahead.

• Full sisters, "Kylie" and "Tiana", were transferred from Virginia Zoo to Zoo Tampa on February 9th and February 12th, respectively, for breeding purposes.
• 5-year-old, "Zawadi", was transferred from Cleveland Metroparks Zoo to Houston Zoo to be their new breeding male.
• 7-year-old, "Joshua", was transferred from Houston Zoo to Lehigh Valley Zoo on May 10th to form a bachelor herd with resident male, "Tatu".
• 2-year-old, "Twiga", was transferred from Santa Barbara Zoo to Disney's Animal Kingdom to be their new breeding male.
• 3-year-old, "Aidan", was transferred from Brevard Zoo to Kansas City Zoo in late September/early October to be their new breeding male.
• 1-year-old, "Providence", was transferred to Roger Williams Park Zoo from Greenville Zoo in late October/early November for breeding purposes.
• 11-month-old, "Luna", was transferred from Phoenix Zoo to Ellen Trout Zoo in late November for breeding purposes.

I asked a zoo employee stationed at the giraffe exhibit yesterday whether he had a name. I was told so far he has no official donor name, but unofficially he's being referred to as "Shaq" (after retired basketball player Shaquille O'Neal), presumably a reference to how tall he was when he was born.

 

CFZ had two giraffe when I was there mid last year, is only one Masai?

 

Yes, the other male is a generic giraffe.

 

Turns out Shani was still pregnant!

She gave birth to the first calf born in the population this year - a healthy female on January 22nd.

 

Well shucks, that’s probably the biggest plot twist of good news I’ve heard this year so far!

 

Wonderful news; a special miracle for Sacramento!

A similar thing happened in Australia with an elephant calf - believed to be dead, yet was born a few days later!

 

Are the Masai giraffes in North America defined by the four species, nine species, or one species classification? If it is by the four species classification, are the "Masai" giraffes managed at the species level, possibly including Thornicroft's genes, or at the subspecies level? I don't know if Thornicroft's giraffes were ever imported, or if they have surviving descendants, which is why I said, 'Possibly.'

 

It's defined by the traditional one species model, Giraffa camelopardalis tippelskirchi.

 

So far as I know there are no Thornicrofts giraffe in captive management in North America. I don’t know about other places.

Very strange sad news! Parker's father, sixteen-year-old Michael (Shomari) has passed away at Santa Barbara Zoo. Michael was euthanized Wednesday from a battle with arthritis.
