The article and the video that accompanies it is the proper way to announce a zoo animal's death, these people really care!

Does anyone know where and when was George born, and where he was before he came to San Francisco?

George was born May 26th, 1998 at Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo to Gunoto and Kali and his littermates were Delta of SDZSP and Java. When he was about 1.5 years old, he and his brother Java were transferred to Landry's Downton Aquarium in Denver. He then moved to San Francisco in 2007 and had his 3 sons, Burung/Berani, Jae-jae, and Kami Sambol, with Leanne in 2008. He then moved to Point Defiance Zoo in 2009 where he sired two more cubs, Bima and Mali, who both ended up passing away at a young age. He sadly passed away at Point Defiance at the age of 14 on November 27th, 2012.

Am I right in thinking that Delta is the mother of Dumai, Kucing and Harimau?

Yes, she is also the mother of the deceased Kemala, Rojo, Sari, Joanne, Majel, Conrad, and Thomas. All born at SDZSP and sired by Utan. Delta, George, and Java's mom Kali is extremely well represented in the population, only around 15 tigers in the population aren't descended from her and most of them are elderly/post-reproductive. Kali was imported from Taronga Zoo and was a daughter of Nico and Meta, who have descendants all over the globe, they are a a far too well represented family.

San Francisco Zoo has announced the passing of 18 year old Leanne/Skylar. She's the mother of Jillian at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, Berani/Burung at Zoo Miami, Kami Sambol at Oklahoma City Zoo and Jae-Jae at Tierpark Berlin.

Leanne was born 10/07/2003 at Toronto Zoo to Rengat and Brytne.

18 years is a good age. Some of her long lived ancestors include:

    Jo (maternal grandmother) aged 20
Grabi (paternal great grandfather) aged 23
Putsi (paternal great grandmother) aged 22
Bea (maternal great grandmother) aged 20
Gunoto (maternal great grandfather) aged 20

Definitely. Her mother Brytne was killed by a male during a failed breeding attempt so it's likely she would've lived longer than 13 years given the longevity in her family.

That’s a real shame. I see her mate was an inexperienced three year old male.

A reoccurring theme in fatal introductions in tigers (not just Sumatrans) seems to be young males as the aggressor and older females as the victim (not always in the same pairing).

Possible reasons could be the inexperience of younger males makes them anxious, which presents as aggression; while older females are at the end of their reproductive lifespan and have less allure.

Malosi passed away in February 2021.

I have heard from keepers that Anala (Female at DAK) is being prepared for transfer to Honolulu Zoo and that a male will be coming in to DAK to breed with Sohni. Has anyone else add or substantiate this?

This is what I have heard as well. Hopefully the transfers happen soon and more cubs will be born!

Was a cause of death released for Malosi? Just curious as he wasn't that old and his mother is alive in Honolulu plus he's the father of one of my favorite Sumatran tigers (Indah).

Cancer of an unknown type. And correction to my original post, he passed in March of 2021. I got the date confused with when Jeda was moved.

Thank you so much for sharing that. His daughter, Indah, is the tiger in my photo from when she lived at the Los Angeles Zoo.

You're welcome. The tiger in my photo is another of his daughters, Anala at DAK. Her and Sohni (Mother of Anala & Jeda) are still going strong.

As noted in the Phoenix Zoo thread, Raja (born at the Topeka Zoo) has moved from Point Defiance Zoo to the Phoenix Zoo. Their introduction notes he now weighs 312 pounds.

Anala is still at Disney's Animal Kingdom. No word on when she will be transferred or when a new male will be arriving.
