I'm really excited to see how this turns out. I feel like it's been awhile since they first announced the renovation. I'm so glad Patches, the current female polar bear will have a nice grassy exhibit to retire. Also, Anana, who's been on concrete at Lincoln Park Zoo for many years.
I'm excited about the new polar bear exhibit! Does anyone know if Patches and Anana will be on exhibit together or kept separate? We're just 9 days away from the official opening. The exhibit has been closed to the public for several weeks. Ground has been broken on the new outdoor ocelot exhibit. It is in front of the Sonora Desert exhibit. I saw it on 10/12/14. It has a long way to go to completion. I didn't think to take a construction photo, but I will on my next visit, probably in November.
I believe starting off, the female polar bears will be exhibited separately. I think I heard they are going to try to put the two together, but it will all depend on their dynamics. Anana will not be on exhibit at opening, she's still going through her quarantine period.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new polar bear exhibit started moments ago. It was scheduled for 10:30 and the featured speaker was Governor Pat McCrory.
Anana, the female polar bear, was actually on exhibit for the opening. She is in the old yard while Patches is in the newer section.

Today i visited the zoo for the first time. The zoo still has one male Lesser Green Broadbill in the collection. Sadly it is off exhibit and in retirement behind the scenes. The male is 23 yrs old. I wish more zoos would have this beautiful species of bird!!!
This is a harder polar bear death for me. I'm so glad she experiences a big pool, dirt, and grass before she died.
