This list has been in the making for nearly ten years now. I started making it when I was in high school and regularly visited the zoo and have added onto it throughout the years using old Zoochat photos, the zoo website on the Wayback Machine, old zoo books and maps, and conversations with zoo employees and coworkers. Despite it's length, it's definitely not a complete list and may have species missing.

Special thanks to @Astrotom3000's NC Zoo species list they posted today for motivating me to post this.

Species that are currently at the zoo will be in bold.

Wow, this is very comprehensive, and I had no idea their past species collection was this expansive and diverse. There are definitely some surprises on there; the 2 African Otter species, Snake-necked Turtles, and the Gibba Turtle (which I heard in another thread was exceptionally rare in NA collections?) are notable standouts. Seems like the African Pavilion has seen whole zoos worth of residents come and go over the years. Thank you for putting this together.

I did notice one omission; Chicken Turtle (Deirochelys reticularia). The zoo had this species in the current Alligator Snapping Turtle exhibit inside the Interpretive Center (mixed with Painted Turtle and Yellow-bellied Sliders) up until 2016. IIRC, they then also had one in Streamside (large aquarium in the lower building) at some point afterwards. They have been gone for a while and I don't think they hold the species currently.

Thanks for reminding me of the Chicken Turtle. Don't know how I forgot that one.

Yeah, when the Pavilion opened in 1984 it was state of the art and had dozens of species. As the years went on the building became older and more out of date and the animal collection shrank until 2009 when the remaining animals were removed. I was 11 when that happened and I personally remember seeing sulcata tortoises, dik-diks, meerkats, colobus monkeys, fennec foxes, trumpeter hornbills, caracals, bateleurs, servals, patas monkeys, baboons, African bullfrogs, dwarf crocodiles, and rock pythons.

I actually had a teacher in high school who had a family member who was instrumental in getting the zoo located to Asheboro and he had a program in his classroom from the pavilion's grand opening that listed all the species.

I'm a huge turtle fan, so I would never forget seeing a turtle and no turtle species goes missing with me noticing. ;)

I would have loved have experienced the African Pavilion in its prime, because those former species would have given NC an elite collection. Even if it became very outdated by the end of its life, it was still the most "out-there" exhibit the zoo had in terms of concept and collection.

Sadly, I only got to experience it with animals in its final years as an exhibit (I started visiting the NC zoo in 2006). By the time I got old enough to drive out on my own, that's when they removed all the animals. Not having that exhibit around now when I am doing 2-day, all-day trips to the zoo is the thing that has really bummed me, thought that might be for the better because that species list would have made the Pavilion alone take up a good portion of my day.

I saw the same species you mentioned, along with Mud Turtles and Cichlids. My last visit to the zoo when the pavilion was still open to visitors was in Sept 2013, and it was only just demolished last year. It's a shame the zoo couldn't save it; a modern overhaul would have been awesome.

Seriously impressive list! I thought they had Komodo dragons there currently, just BTS until their new habitat is built? Also, where were all those kangaroos and wallaby? Strange!

I was fortunate enough to go to the African Pavilion around 1996/7, it was really cool at that time. Its a bit depressing that they just bulldozed it and more or less left the area as is, which I suppose is the same as the aviary? I didn't make it to the aviary last year when I was there, so I am very disappointed in that development.

I think it was planned for Asia to be open by the time the komodo dragons grew but as it got pushed back several years they grew too big for any holding area.

The Kangaroos and Wallabies were in the Australian Walkabout exhibit. This was a temporary exhibit in 2004 that was where KidZone is now. It replaced the Touch and Learn Center, a petting zoo and farm heritage exhibit.

Interesting, I wonder where they ended up.
Ah, that makes sense as to why I never saw them, my visits were separated from around 1997, 2001, and then until 2021....so a while!
