I have a interest in Old zoo postcards and photographs as you can see by my uploads in the Dudley Zoo gallery (UK) and was wondering why there does not seem to be many old photographs on this site. These are a good source of information and history and I think they would give us many hours of good chat and imagine looking at them from todays point of view as against the days when they where considered to be state of art and even futuristic in some cases. So could we please have more old photographs and postcards (from spelling erroany zoo worldwide)uploaded Please feel free to view my uploads and leave a comment Does anyone else have any views on the subject of Old photographs or postcards or does anyone know if there are any web sites that specialise in old zoo photographs or postcards

Old photos from Detroit Zoo I love the idea of posting old photos. My dad was an animal keeper and chimp trainer at the Detroit Zoo in the 1940s and 50s, and I have a few pictures from those days. Also 2 newspaper articles promoting the chimp shows from that era. I'll scan and post them this weekend.
Old photos and articles about Detroit Zoo chimps I've scanned in a couple of photos from the early 1950s, and two news articles as well. They are in the Detroit Zoo gallery. I'm trying to gather info from anyone who remembers the chimp shows. Check my blog Chimp Trainer's Daughter for my memories of those years.
OLD POSTCARDS I too am very interested in zoo history through old postcards and photos. I have hundreds of postcards, some of which I can't identify. I do have a website for old postcards from Chessington Zoo before it became the World of Adventures. I can't give the URL as I am not wanting to advertise it. Chessington was my local "Zoo" until 1980. I will sort out some old postcards and upload them here. Brian Robinson. (reptile1517)
I'll admit to the horrible shame of collecting zoo ephemera: photographs, postcards, old guidebooks (I prefer 19th century and early 20th). Is there a support group?
The IZES (Independent Zoo Enthusiasts Society) offer a massive discount on my book about old postcards.'We Went to the Zoo Today...'
ZOO POSTCARDS Nothing wrong in collecting old photos, postcards and zoo ephemera. After all, nostalgia is a thing of the past. reptile1517
That reminds me, I emailed some old zoo photos from Seneca Park Zoo to a friend a couple years ago. Would anyone be interested in seeing them? I believe they are from the early 1980's. You can't see much of their exhibit, but you can see the vintage look from the photos. I saw a photo of the old Polar Bear exhibit and if I remember correctly, it used to be in the front of the zoo where the African Spurred Tortoises are now. It was nothing but a concrete hill with a hole in the middle they called a pool. Eek!
I've put old photos from the Detroit Zoo chimp show into an album. Can I put a link here, I wonder. http://www.zoochat.com/members/dawnforsythe-albums-detroit-zoo-chimpanzees-1950s.html
Hello, if anybody want to swop zoo memorabilia, visit this page - there you can find thousands of zoo materials of all kinds. Really very various things are there - from common things like postcards or guidebook, leaflets etc. through pins, buttons, posters, coins, calendars etc. to many unorthodox things. Everything both new and old - from all over the world but especially from Czech r., Slovakia and countries of former Soviet Union.
Which bit of this site has the guidebooks? I only collect guidebooks, books, annual reports and postcards of views of the zoos (not animals)
