Orangutans in the UK and Ireland

I have now made my update to Orangs in the UK. After the departure of Kai, Lingaa & Joly to Spain there are now 52 Orangutans in the UK, 35 Borneans (11:24), 16 Sumatrans (7:9) (I made a mistake last time counting 8 males instead of 7 :) ) and the male hybrid (Sumatran X Bornean) at Colchester. The orangutans at Dublin will now also feature.

If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask, hope you enjoy

    Thanks,

    Ed

    Visiting all the orangutans

I have just returned from a Grand Tour of UK Orangutans starting at Paignton then Chester, Blackpool, Dudley, Twycross, Colchester and Monkey World. I think I saw everyone apart from Jurong at Dudley and Bulu Mata and Rieke at Monkey World. If anyone has any questions I may be able to answer them. I hope to be able to upload some photos at some point.

I went to Dublin in July and last visited Durrell in 2013.

Are their any zoos that might be adding orangutans in the future?

I can name a few places they would do well at (Yorkshire, Banham).

Okay for those of us that don't know anything about Orangs but why would these collections do well with keeping them.Particual keen to here just why YWP would given that they don't believe in using cages to hold anything!

I would love to see a great ape species at either of these collections. But thats just my personal opinion. YWP is a great zoo but the one thing missing for me is a great ape however again this is only my opinion.

Banham zoo however once talked of Gorillas so maybe one day we might see an ape species return to one of the ZSEA zoos.

I wish YWP would get them and they were on a collection plan in the past but I can't imagine what sort of accommodation they'd have.

I have just visited Durrell so have seen all Great British orangs, apart from two at Monkeyworld, and photographed most of them. I should be able to rectify the Monkeyworld omission at some point. Coincidentally, I have also seen 25 GB gorillas over the last few weeks.

Aren't the orangutans at Dublin Bornean?

(Not trying to be pompously pedantic, just noticed that they're listed as Sumatran on MG's PDF and thought he may want to rectify that :) )

I admit to having met MagpieGoose, but I did not teach him how to count. Honest! ;)
