I have been hoping to create this thread for a while following on from my orangutans in UK thread and wanted to branch out to Europe. I know there are previous threads about the orange people in Europe but sadly they died. So, hopefully this one can be full of updates from across Europe. Also Zootierliste is a bit out of date with Orangs so I have included Israel aswell.

So to the best of my knowledge, there are 161 Sumatrans, 171 Borneans and 21 Hybrids meaning 353 Orangs in Europe. Although a few Orangs seem to have got lost in my research like Bangghi from Rio Safari Elche who was moved on after he started fighting with his father, Nakal but I do hope to find information like this out soon. I have not included the Orangs in the Russian shopping centre because I wouldn't really consider that a zoo. Please correct me on any mistakes I have made. Thanks, MG

Monkeyworld Sumatrans are 2.1, not 1.2. (Bulu-mata is male also)

Thanks for this. It's very interesting. I have an old studbook that I've tried to keep up-to-date, mainly from news on Zoochat, but clearly a lot has happened that I've been unaware of. I'm going to be very busy comparing the two lists!

Regarding Rio Safari Elche (which I didn't know existed until I watched the recent Monkeyworld series), did Bangghi move there from Fuengirola with Nakal? I gathered that Nakal retired there about 4(?) years ago and was living alone.

Jardin des Plantes Paris - I have a note that a Zoochatter saw a male there in September 2014. This was after the death of Joey who went to Paris from Sosto in November 2013 and died in July 2014

Nakal moved over in 2013 and Bangghi moved over in 2014. I can't find anything on another male at Paris JP. AFAIK he was the last male to live there, maybe it was his ghost :p

There is no male at JDP (as of Spring 2016). There was discussion at the time (article below) that they may go out of Orangutans without funding for a new enclosure. Sorry about the dodgy translation

Has mythical slut and her red hairy acolytes and they live their last days in the menagerie of the Jardin des Plantes (V e )? Within a year, will the little Parisians still be able to afford this incredible face-to-face through a window with these great apes, orangutans, stars of this zoo? Nothing is less certain ... Michel Saint-Jalme, its director, raises the alarm bell and asks for sub ... "If in a year, we did not find a solution, No promise of the state, we can not keep our orangutans! "

" It is not possible in these conditions of captivity, "abounds Christelle Hano, the chief trainer. On Sunday, when the menagerie team was presenting a new boarder, a Malaysian tapir, Michel Saint-Jalme returned to the situation of Nénette, 47 (!) And Tamu and Theodora And presented a sketch. Current cage is connected to a tunnel leading to an aviary of 585 m 2and 15 m high, currently the enclosure antelope. The monkeys could climb up there. "This system exists in other zoos in Europe," argues Michel Saint-Jalme. For this reworked, aerated and above all enlarged, "we need 2.5 M €," he says. We are soliciting Segolene Royal, "the Minister of Ecology. "The problem, says an employee on condition of anonymity, is that the subsidy for the zoo 2016 has been reduced from € 17 million to € 4 million! The fault of the new museum of Man and especially the zoo of Vincennes which are very expensive! "

Since 1996, giraffes, elephants, bears and lions are all gone

It's not the first time that the two ministries, Ecology and Education, were arrested. "A courier is leaving," said Michel Saint Jalme. And it is not the first time that the place of "large animals" in captivity within this nugget of the Parisian heritage arises ... In 1996, there were 522 species in the menagerie. Today, there are 180 ... The giraffes, the elephants, the bears, the lions are all gone. "Should we still keep great apes in captivity?" Michel Saint-Jalme asks himself. The boss says he is "ready to take his stick of pilgrim" to get money from the ministries but also from private sponsors. "If there are no more orangutans here, lament Sunday Laurence, visitor of 10 years, taped in front of the window of Nénette, I will not come anymore! These are my favorite animals! "

@ Nisha - thanks for this, it explains why they haven't brought in a new male since Joey's death. The male sighting in 2014 must have been a case of mistaken identity.

@MagpieGoose - given the glacial speed at which animal movements take place, it seems unlikely, though not impossible, that Bangghi's been transferred elsewhere since 2014, so maybe he has died. Nakal's mother Bulu's line, despite her 9 pregnancies, has not been very successful :( Her last offspring, Gambira, who will be 20 this year, is still waiting to be moved to a breeding situation.

Which of Bulu's offspring have bred into succeeding generations- can you list their details and locations?

According to this article, Gambira will be moved to Hai Park Zoo in Israel.
"Orang-Utan "Ito" from the Allwetterzoo Münster is co-sponsored in the European breeding program (EEP) in Israel as a breeding man on a new Orang plant with two females: "Josje" (23) from the Dutch zoo in Apenheul and "Gambira" (19) from Paignton Zoo in Great Britain."

I did hear about this move some months ago but she's still here in Paignton. Fingers crossed it goes ahead, although I'll miss seeing her.

    Very interesting list, thankyou.

At least if/when Gambira leaves, Bulu will still have direct descendants at Paignton.

As you know, I researched Bulu's family tree a few years ago so it's not as current as it could be. However, this is what I know:

    ZSL
    21/1/70 - Boy x Bulu = stillborn baby
    21/6/71 - Boy x Bulu = Suka F
    30/5/74 - Boy x Bulu = Jantan M. He died 12/4/86
    15/11/76 - miscarriage
    17/9/77 - Saleh x Bulu = Sakan F. She died 25/9/77
    3/3/79 - Dodo x Bulu = Bintang M. He died 23/11/84
    22/4/83 - Anak x Bulu = Kadim M . He died 11/6/01
    27/7/87 - Anak x Bulu = stillbirth
    23/1/89 - Salah x Bulu = Nakal M
    Bulu then retired to Paignton
    22/3/97 - Nakal x Bulu = Gambira F

Daughter, Suka, and sons, Kadim and Nakal, had offspring:
    1982 - Anak x Suka = Jago M
    1987 - Anak x Suka = Bako M
    1990 - Kadim x Senja = Chinta F
    1991 - Suka x Dodo = Janah F
    1997 - Kadim x Loki = Jewi F
    1997 - Nakal x Bulu = Gambira F (see above)
    2006 - Nakal x Mukah = Bangghi M
(I believe Nakal fathered another child in Fuengirola who DNS.)

Great grandchildren that I know of are:
1995 - Jago x Jewel = Joey M. Presumably the same Joey who died in Paris in 2014.
    1996 - Bako x Sabine = Sol F
    1996 - Jago x Bosja = Bako M
    1998 - Bako x Sabine = Benjamin M
    2003 - Muda x Janah = Bayu M
    2013 - Demo x Chinta = Natalia F

A quick look through MagpieGoose's list shows Jewel in Rhenen; a Bayu in Duisberg; Bako and Sabine in Boras; a Benjamin in Kaliningrad; a Sol in Tiergarten Schonbrunn; and, of course, Chinta and Natalia are at Paignton. I've written 'a Bayu' etc as without more details, name duplications mean I can't be sure if they're the right orangs. One would need to dig deeper to discover who is still alive and who has bred since I compiled the list.

Is Bunyu the father? Presumably Telok has died? He's not on your list above.

Are there no longer two orangs in Palmitos Park in Gran Canaria? Last I heard there were two males, Leelee and Peek, though these may have died/been transferred.

Vienna Zoo has announced that female Bornean Sol is pregnant:
"Hardly to be overlooked: The orangutan female Sol in the animal garden Schönbrunn is pregnant. Now it's a good idea to say that everything is going well. For the animal garden it would be the first offspring of these endangered human beings since the young Maya in 2004. "Regular ultrasound examinations by our veterinarians confirm that the small is well developed and the heart stroke is strong," explains animal garden director Dagmar Schratter. The fetus is already fully developed, now it only has to grow. The sex was not yet recognizable.

At the end of July Sol and the male Vladimir mated. The gestation period for orangutans is around nine months. Therefore, birth should be expected in March. Schratter: "Sol is doing well. She is not really different, except she is a nap during the day. "The Orangutan female was born on 4 June 1996 in the Borås Zoo in Sweden. When the ORANG.erie was opened in the Tiergarten in 2009, Sol came to Vienna and moved into the new Orangutan enclosure. For them it would be the first rearing of a young animal. In 2012, she had a stillbirth, which is often the case with first-born babies."
