I don't know why I said they were there in 2000, I know they weren't part of the first phase of Hippo River, but I can't believe they have only been there 5 years!
Wasn't there also another female at the zoo (possibly before the Taronga animals arrived) that died after giving birth (the baby died as well)?
Yeah same here. I saw the story of the mother and baby dying a few weeks ago on a rerun on Zoo Babies (or is it Zoo Juniors?). I believe that the episode was from around 2002.
That orang was called Dhara (not sure of the spelling) and she arrived at Auckland with Indra and Horst. Her and Indra were best friends. She had had 4 babies already but for some reason this birth went terribly wrong. Her baby dies and a couple of days later she died as well. The cause is still unknown to me but I think it was some sort of cancer. Christine was heart broken and yes she does talk about it on Indra's episode on 'The Zoo This Is Your Life'.
I don't know right at this moment but I will try to find out and get back to you. Do you mean the death of Dhara and her last baby?
Yup, the deaths of Dhara and her last baby. Just curious really - no major rush. Last night they showed an entire episode about Christine raising Iwani, the baby siamang.
I think the incident with Dhara happened around 2000. Yes Christine has hand-raised Iwani and his twin sister Ibaranie because they were abandoned from their mother, Iurrie, when they were just 6 weeks old. Ibaranie was badly bitten by her mother and died a couple of weeks later. Iwani was born in 2004 and today he is living at the zoo with a female named Kera and the keepers are hoping that they will eventually breed. And believe it or not, even now, Iwani still thinks that Christine is his mum!
Early 2006. He's been paired with a female from Mogo and they had there first baby (a male) some time ago
Yers i have just been reading the orangutan studbook and it says that the father of isim is uknowin is this still the case and also that intams father is charlie and datuks father is horst and that datuk died in 1998 does any one no why he died?
Here is my orangutan family tree research blog: http://www.familyorangutan.tk I have researched all of Auckland Zoo's current orangutans, and as Melur/Gangsa and Wanita have not bred, nor are they related to the other orangutans, I have included three separate trees.
