The zoo’s first California Condor egg of the season was laid on January 16th to No. 756 and Maluk. The chick is expected to hatch in March, assuming all goes well.

The first condor chick of the 2022 breeding season has hatched:

The Oregon Zoo’s first California condor chick of 2022 has hatched at their Jonsson Center for Wildlife Conservation.

The zoo released video Tuesday that shows the fluffy little gray hatchling. Officials say this is a significant hatch in the effort to save the critically endangered species.

They say the new parents are attentive and the chick is healthy.

According to the studbook, he passed away on November 8, 2016. I don't believe the zoo ever publicly announced the death. The last time he was mentioned was when Buttercup arrived in October of 2016.

Leah the Common chimpanzee has died:

Oregon Zoo says goodbye to elderly chimpanzee Leah - KTVZ

Leah was born on May 15, 1974, at the Oregon Zoo, then known as the Portland Zoological Gardens. Around that time, the zoo’s pioneering work with chimpanzees drew the attention of renowned conservationist Jane Goodall, who visited regularly, getting to know Leah and the others.

At 47, Leah was one of the oldest animals at the zoo but still considered the “baby” of Portland’s very elderly chimp group. She is survived by her big sister Delilah, who turns 49 next month; male chimp Jackson, 50; and the troop leader Chloe, 53.

A Bornean orangutan was born April 13:

    Oregon Zoo welcomes baby orangutan

The Oregon Zoo welcomed a new addition, as 20-year-old Bornean orangutan Kitra gave birth to a new baby this week.

Caregivers won’t know whether the newborn is male or female for a few weeks. Once the pair are feeling comfortable and healthy, animal-care staff will determine whether they are ready for a public debut.

The Bornean orangutan infant is a female and has been named Jolene:

After weeks of consideration, Oregon Zoo names baby orangutan

Inspired by the line in the Dolly Parton classic that goes, “Your beauty is beyond compare / with flaming locks of auburn hair,” the baby will be called Jolene, according to the Oregon Zoo.

“Once we confirmed she was a girl, our keeper team knew right away what they wanted to call her. They’ve been playing the song on repeat ever since!”
(And I thought New Zealand’s zoos had problems with “I Like to Move It” vis a vis Ring-tailed lemurs ).

Oregon Zoo Sets Condor Chick Record | News Radio 1190 KEX | Portland Local News

Twelve fuzzy California condor chicks are squawking in their nests this spring at the Oregon Zoo's Jonsson Center for Wildlife Conservation — the biggest batch yet in the zoo's 19-year effort to save the birds from extinction.

Last year’s record-breaking season saw 10 chicks, each one important to the future of this critically endangered species.
