Any news on this - most modern of - Japan's zoos? Interesting births? New exhibits? Plans? New animals of note?
This new is a few days old but I felt like this thread is too unchecked. Black rhinoceros Tommy died at the age of 36. Tommy was born at Hiroshima's Asa Zoological park.
Osaka Zoo is experiencing a continuous decline in visitors. According to its own figures, it had 1.94 million visitors in 2007 - but in 2013 only 1.13 million. In order to increase its attractiveness, in 2016 the Zoo published Masterplan 101, which provides for a major redesign of the zoo. The last elephant of Osaka Zoo dies in 2018: 0.1 Asian elephant "Hiroko" came to the zoo in 1970.
I can’t tell. But from what I can tell from google translate, the zoo probably will be able to renovate itself more quickly without waiting for the municipal approval.
イッちゃん子育て中 : 天王寺動物園スタッフブログ Polar bear Icchan gave birth to two cubs. Pretty surprising for those who saw her enclosure.
Great news and twins at that! BTW: I must say polar bears have bred in exclosures much for wear before. Space is just not everything, I have seen large ones where breeding has never worked. For polar bears first and foremost good denning facilities and adequate husbandry and basic facilities are much more important, I believe.

Am I right in thinking the zoo already set up a program of renovation and redevelopments prior to his arrival? Giraffe and rhino yards seem more modern now than in many traditional Japanese zoos?!
Tennoji zoo and Oji zoo participated for a collaborated study between the university of Iwate and the university of Liverpool: The characteristic response of domestic cats to plant iridoids allows them to gain chemical defense against mosquitoes. Two amur leopards, two jaguars, and two Eurasian lynxes participated the study.
I visited the zoo in December 2020–it was empty then. No news since then so it should still be empty.
I remember reading somewhere a few years ago about their future renovations planned by the current Director, in which was included the Asian elephant exhibit. It was going to be changed into something else (I don’t remember what exactly it was). The Zoo will be turned into an independent administrative institution next month (April 2021), with the former Director of Maruyama Zoo as their new one. The current Director will actually be “removed” from his duty. This might affect the current Director’s plans, but in my opinion, the zoo would most likely prefer to stick them. His plans were indeed rational, but not acceptable to Osakans.
Can you explain about the plans and why these where not acceptable to Osakans? Whereabouts on the map is the old Elephant House? ZOO MAP: アジアの熱帯雨林ゾーンと周辺エリア|園内紹介|天王寺動物園 https://www.leszoosdanslemonde.com/zoos/asie/japon/osaka/maps/osaka_plan_2008_1.jpg
