All I know is they have a totally female group... Again try e-mailing the zoo, they go out of their way to be helpful...

    Hi,

Jaya (1990) had a daughter Jade in 1999.

Jaya and Te-ook (M99) had three male otters in 2001.

Jade and Nip (M90) had five daughters around 2002 time. One of these was Jin, antoehr Jala is the mother of the two pups.

Jade is mum to all the other 4 otters at the zoo; Java, Jemima, Jeta and Jana (new mum). As well as Jin of course.

I'm pretty sure that Auckland Zoo were one of the recipients of 3 Otters which were sent from Underwater World in Mooloolaba Qld in 2008. I worked for the Vet which works for Underwater World, and helped with all the heath checks they had to undertake before leaving Australia for Quarantine purposes.

Which one went to Auckland - well that I can not answer, but could find out if you wish?

Have the otters always been mixed with the red pandas? Just noticed it on the zoo map.

No - 3 males went to NZ mid 08 from Underwater World in Mooloolaba Qld Australia.

I think they all went to diff zoos though. I know they were all doing their quarantine in Auckland. I think the other 2 went to Wellington, and Willowbank?

Not sure UWW is connected with ISIS?

They aren't actually mixed together, it just looks that way on the map. Their enclosures sort of back onto each other.

Though interesting that you mention it as they did in fact let the otters into the red panda enclosure a couple of weeks ago as an experiment to see how it would go. Have to say it didnt go too well. The pandas may look sweet and cuddly but boy did Amber and Maya turn on the otters. One of them, I think is was Maya, even pinned down one of them. Wasnt pretty though everyone got out without harm. The only injuries were to Maya and Amber who had a little fight with each other at one point after the otters left.
