I actually do not know - I haven't seen it the last few times I visited, so I've assumed it either left or died.

We can be reasonably sure that it is no longer at Edinburgh though, as Hamlyn's Monkey is no longer listed on their official website in the index of species held - although Edinburgh Zoo is terrible at updating listings for species they still hold (for instance, the listing for Golden Cats doesn't reflect the 2009 arrival of Ipoh, never mind the 2012 death of Bruno and arrival of Khaan!) they are *very* efficient at removing species from the list as soon as they are no longer held.

Things are getting quite bleak for guenons in general, I fear...

That's no doubt because otherwise they could be accused of wrongly advertising what species they have on show. Whereas the particular individuals held is far less important in that respect.;)

Very sad about the Hamlyn's- I wonder what made them finally give up on them-I guess 1. no real hope of maintaining them and 2. too similar to the more successful L'Hoest's?

It’s really sad if there are no more Hamlyn’s owl-faced monkeys in the UK.

I would love to see this guenon return to London Zoo. That seems appropriate as the species was named after a London Zoo animal; the zoo obtained the type specimen from the (once) famous animal dealer John Daniel Hamlyn and the specific name hamlyni was bestowed in his honour.

She left for La Palmyre in Spring 2012 (and they have just had there first birth of this species in 16 years so transfer was clearly a success!)

A further male was born 2010 after "Kenge's" death. Do you know what happened to this one?

A good choice to send the 5 years old female to La Palmyr.

Does Bojnice Zoo have any others, or will it just be this pair of (evidently) non-breeders?

I would have thought that very unlikely. London only went out of them about a decade ago- there was successful breeding followed by the usual 'disappearance'.(deaths?) Plus their Monkey cages are pretty much all full and they have a representative of Guenons already with the Dianas.

It is a new species for Bojnice.

I imagine the monkey house at Edinburgh will be a bit impoverished at present - the Purple Langurs left a couple of months ago, and now have been joined by the Hamlyn's. Short of there having been a new arrival which hasn't been reported yet, one wonders if pre-existing species have been spread across more enclosures to give them room.

Aiming to visit again before too long, so I'll be sure to report on the matter.

I expect it will be full of L'Hoests and Dianas.

I do find it sad that Edinburgh have finally given up with the Hamlyn's-they had a good record with them previously but presumably they realised that without a fresh import they wouldn't be able to breed them anymore, and also with so few in Europe now, new partners of the right age/sex aren't easy to aquire either. But if that last pair are the only ones at Bojnice they aren't likely to do much with them there either.:(

So at Edinburgh focus is now on the bolder, more free-breeding L'Hoests.

I concur; unfortunately, I think this is very unlikely although, given that the type specimen was a London Zoo animal, it would be nice if the species were represented in the collection again.

(The type specimens of L’Hoest’s monkey, Allen’s swamp monkey and Sykes’ monkey were also London Zoo animals..........)

On the site of Antwerp zoo is an article (since yesterday) that says that they have a male, Kibo, and since june this year a female called Jimmel.

Doue la Fontaine became new holder of Hamlyn-monkeys last year. They are going to co-house them with okapis.

XOSA arrived from Antwerp Zoo, where she was born. Another monkey arrived from Amsterdam Artis Zoo, this one was born at La Palmyre Zoo, an older monkey I think, the last breeding there took place in 1996.

Are you able to list for us which Zoos still have Hamlyn's in Europe now, and how many there are at each?

Thanks Bjoern. There are still a few more than I thought there are now, and breeding is still taking place in several places. Perhaps there is hope yet....
