I've just had my zoo membership renewal letter through. New or renewed memberships will no longer allow access to Newquay zoo or vice-versa. However, if renewed within 30 days there will be a 20% discount applied.
I'm disappointed and saddened by this news and cannot really understand the logic other than they have worked out financial viability? Otherwise, would it make it easier to offload Newquay zoo from WP Trust in the future?
    Hmmm !!

Neither zoo accepts ABWAK either. This is from before Covid.

Sometimes they would accept it, others they wouldn't. The last time I went to either they wouldn't- I think that is permanent now.

I'm pretty sure it was half price, similar to that of Bristol/Wild Place.

Its varied a lot, sometimes it was full free entry, while the next time they would never have heard of it ! I've had every combination over the years, but now its refused fullstop I think- I have not been in the last year or two.

Desert house is back open plus the ‘middle’ tropical area. The autumnal trees look great in the valley at the moment. Still no additions to the stock.

I visited the Desert House today for the first time since lockdown. As far as I could tell, the occupants haven't changed despite all the bird-sized gaps around the rest of the zoo. The budgerigars must have been breeding well - they are everywhere. The Brazilian guinea pigs are still there. I didn't spot any elegant crested tinamou but they could have been hiding (I didn't linger as it was getting crowded).

I didn’t see the Tinamou either - probably gone? ( could be shy after lockdown ?)

Probably joined the avian exodus then. They used to be quite bold. Some of the birds must have been surprised by the sudden influx of people - I saw a couple of budgies going into a rock crevice right next to the path, presumably their nest site.

I met the Kiwi a few years ago and he is indeed fascinating. I can’t for the life of me remember what he shares his enclosure with though? Some parrot species I believe? They aren’t allowed to bother him during the day when he’s asleep.

I hear that the noise in the Ape House at the weekend was, despite staff's best efforts, enough for gorilla, Kivu, to throw a log at somebody being particularly annoying and crack the glass. The window is now boarded over. So some individuals at the zoo won't mind the forthcoming lack of visitors.

We felt as though we were on a farewell visit, wondering if we'd see it all again. Presumably they can survive 4 weeks of closure, but any longer......?

Oh no. I’m nervous again about Paigntons future. Sad about the lack of etiquette in the ape house - very frustrating! I hope that essential work & re-stocking admin can be focussed on during this lockdown. ☘️

A male Bongo has joined the collection as part of the EEP :) Some great pre-lockdown news!

The male is 6 year old Ali from Knowsley, to form a breeding pair with resident female Azizi :)

Four year old male Sumatran tiger, Lucu, moved to Edinburgh Zoo yesterday. This leaves just elderly female, Shakira, although the zoo hints at developments in the next few months. See Facebook.

@TriUK this update from Simon Tongue is very refreshing.I am ecstatic that Paignton Zoo is safe from closure! I cannot wait to see the Zoo revive new residents for their multiple breeding programmes over the coming months.
