They received 15 white pelicans from Artis last year I believe. These two howler monkeys have been housed there for a few years now. Two years ago they were kept in the back left corner between the entrance and the restaurant area. I believe they were separated because they didn't want to mix the mother and child with the two newly arrived females at that time.
Pairi have announced on their Instagram that Asian elephant Soraya is expected her first calf! She is expected to give birth by the end of the year according to the post and if everything goes well it will be the third time in two years that a calf is born at Pairi. With the new calf, Pairi will have 23 elephants living in the reserve, a European record afaik.
New female Wombat arrived from Copenhagen and are introduced to eachother : https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=854192272019047
23 elephants in total that is, not all of them live in the main reserve as they are split into at least 4 different groups (of which 1 African group). They do have the largest amount of elephants, that's been the case now for a few years I recall. Wether they have the biggest herd is another more doubtfull case.
Yes, they have the biggest herd of asian elephants in Europe. Their elephants are divided into these groups: 1. African elephants- Suzy, Chitana 2. Older asian elephant cows- Jana and Praya 3. Sayang's family- Sayang, Saphira, Sitara, Thambi, Ravi 4. Mala and Khaing Hnin Hnin's family- leader cow Mala, Khaing Hnin Hnin, Aye Chan May, Farina, Soraya, Amithi, Malay, Nang Faa, Ta Wan, Malee, Luna Bulls Chamundi and Po Chin live separately or with different herds. The largest herd is therefore the fourth herd. Leipzig or Cologne compete a bit, but they don't have as many elephants in one herd.
Five new blackbuck (one male, four females) have arrived at Pairi Daiza from Krefeld. They join the four blackbuck already at Pairi Daiza to form a herd of nine. Log into Facebook
I assume this might have been the end of blackbuck management at Zoo Krefeld, right?! (or would this be some of the offspring born over the years there?)
With concrete plans to replace their Asian Savannah exhibit with one for mountain zebras, I think Krefeld going out of blackbuck entirely makes more sense...
This comment and further discourse should really be in the Zoo Krefeld thread. I will ask to mods to place it into the Krefeld Zoo threads.
Why would you ask about Krefeld news in a Pairi Daiza thread then....? In other news, if the rumours are correct then from what I’ve heard PD are down to just one Tasmanian devil....
One would imagine the fact they were extremely elderly (having been born in 2013) would be the main factor at hand.
I am unaware of which one is left - I have only heard a rumour from a close friend in Belgium that there is one left. The males were both at quite an age - I’m unsure of the female’s age.
Orang Utan Sari has given birth to a boy (the group from the flowertempel). During the current lockdown Pairi Daiza can not open her gates for regular visistor, however the park is open for hotelguests.
The female and the two 7-year old male Devils have all died. The surviving animal is 1.0 born in 2016 at Copenhagen Zoo.
The Facebook post announcing this news today mentioned that the birds will be moving into Pairi Daiza's new Conservation Center for Endangered birds, and attached to the message are some pretty nice behind-the-scenes photos of that center. Log into Facebook
