I’m thinking for my zoo to use raccoon dogs in the panda exhibit, they have enough own space and can even choose to go to another exhibit. The pandas have their own space as well. Of course pandas are never mixed with any other species before but I think this one could be successful what do you guys think?
If you guys think it shouldn’t happen I could also put them with red foxes or with red pandas which is also never done before so would like to here your expectations and opinions about that’s as well!

I think you’d be hard pushed to get the Chinese government to agree to that. I also can’t imagine that the pandas’ specialised dietary requirements would fit with raccoon dogs, nor their sleepy tendencies compared to the dogs’ activity levels.

Yeah China is definitely a hard one, but the dogs won’t eat the bamboo. And pandas are actually in the wild omnivorous eating sometimes eggs and insects (although rare) their digest system is still adapted to meat so it won’t be a drama if they got some of that. And the raccoon dogs could also be fed on places the pandas can’t come! Would you be exited if it’s allowed or you really don’t see the good in it?

I would certainly be interested, but I would also like to see a walkthrough aviary with colugo and a mixed exhibit of saola and giant muntjac ;) given that specific zoos in Europe with pandas have been explicitly told to keep the pandas as a separate section to their other animals tells me that the Chinese government would definitely be a problem.
