A male white lion named Zeus was shot and killed Feb 28th after he escaped from his enclosure. Staff and police decided it was the only safe thing to do and that tranquilling him was not a good option for public safety reasons. Apparently human error is to blame for the escape. I figured there have been any issues with the exhibit. Original articles did mention 'human error', as in someone forgot to close the door behind them. Not saying that's what happened, but the error falls into that find of category. I didn't really get why they had to shoot the lion instead of tranquilizing it, but the above article explained it pretty clearly. They were losing light and the tranquilizer takes 20 minutes to take affect. If the lion ran away, it could be pretty hard to track in the dark, assuming it was even knocked down. It's a shame really, but the zoo is looking at modifying its protocols, asking help from experts in the field. That's a step in the right direction for sure.

Bystanders captured her by hand and rushed her to waiting vets, presumably from the zoo. It was later announced on Facebook she had passed.
