Phoenix Zoo has a reptile area with several open-air hallways full of reptile terrariums; do you not count this as a reptile house? I was somewhat sure it was king cobra, but it's possible that it was another species. I saw them a year ago, they had a male-female pair but only one was on display at a time.

That hallway is in their Arizona section and displays native rattlesnakes and lizards.

When I visited, there were some exotic herps as well. One of them was a king cobra.

There's a snouted cobra, but to my knowledge there has not ever been king cobra at the Phoenix Zoo.

In late 2017 the park received a male puma cub. It was found orphaned in an area not far from the park itself. Plans are to eventually introduce it to their two year old female, who was found orphaned in south Arizona.

This month (January 2018) the park received a female tiger cub (bengal/hybrid). FB post does not mention where the cub came from.

On January 9, 2018 a female lion was born. On January 19, 2018 two male lions were born. All cubs have the same father, who mated with both mothers. Cubs are currently not on exhibit, but are introduced to the audience before the weekend Tiger Splash Show. (source: Facebook)

In August 2019 one of the park's two adult male giraffes died (they have no females). The park is starting off 2020 with the addition of two young male giraffes, ages 10 months and 6 months. Being a non-accredited park, the giraffes had to be purchased (which is why they have no females as those are exponentially more expensive). The park initiated a fundraising drive to raise the money for the new giraffes. (I am going to interject my opinion here, but I cannot help but question the ethics of a for-profit animal park seeking donations).

In spite of most zoos and safari parks being closed due to Covid-19 virus, the park remains open. However they are instituting a new way to experience it beginning today (March 26) and continuing through at least mid April. The main walking path, which is a large dirt road loop, will temporarily be a drive-thru instead. Visitors stay in their car to pay then drive through on their own with staff standing in front of various exhibits to see the animals. There is another large safari section that can normally be seen on their own safari bus and I assume that closed previously.

The park experience is being revised based on days. Sunday through Thursday they will continue as a drive-thru experience, which started as a response to the Covd-19 restrictions. Friday and Saturday they will revert to a standard walk-through experience. The safari bus (through a savanna not available to visitors otherwise) has resumed as well. More information here: Drive-Thru and Walk-In Hours of Operation -

Nooo… well, at least he lived a nice long life for a hyena. He and Chipa were the first hyenas I ever saw in-person, and I will never forget when he (or maybe it was Chipa) growled at my sister and her friends because they thought he was a wolf on my first trip to Out of Africa. RIP, Chitabe. You were one cool Crocuta.
