Three remaining Commerson's Dolphins at SWC moved to Aquatica at SWF. All Commerson's now in Florida. Unfortunately, Betsy did not survive long after the move this month. Only 4 remain. Sadly, the end is nearing for the display of this active species.
How is the situation in Japan? Darn it, SeaWorld just figured out a way to A) get me to travel to Florida in the next few years and B) buy a ticket to a water park.
If you have the time, make a reservation at Discovery Cove. It seems expensive but the place is nice and all food and such are included in your admission. Most importantly for you, with a reservation you can visit all SeaWorld parks and Busch Gardens Tampa for free within a week of your reservation! One day when I eventually make my visits to SeaWorld, this is what I plan to do. ~Thylo
I find it sad few Commerson's dolphins are left in captivity. Out of the few cetacean species displayed in captivity they seemed to do the best.
Japan seems to have been fairly successful with them. They've been able to breed them at Marinepia, Wakayama Adventure World and Toba Aquarium. Marinepia has recently closed to make way for a new aquarium in Sendai, however the species isn't mentioned on the new aquarium's website so it's possible they've been sent either to Adventure World or Toba.
I shall look into that when I make said trip. I plan to try and go during the slow season, whenever that is. Plus I understand that Discovery Cove has one of the Common/Bottlenose Hybrids. An F2 hybrid to be exact. I think his name is Cooper, I wonder if he is one of the encounter dolphins. I probably want to go to all three of the Orlando parks. I also hope to fit in a side trip to the Space Center. See Atlantis and the Vehicle Assembly Building. I feel so bourgeois saying this, but I think such a trip would be a good experience.
Maybe we will be lucky and eventually see some of the Japanese animals coming here, I hope so because I am incredibly fond of the species.
