The Calgary Zoo's male Indian Elephant will be going to Busch Gardens. The three females will be sent to the Smithsonian National Zoo.

And BeardsleyZooFan, you mean "Reticulated" Giraffes:p

Actually, BGT has some of the few "pure" Reticulated Giraffes left in AZA zoos, unless I'm mistaken.

I've had a discussion about this with jbnbsn99 and Ituri in the chatroom and while they did have the last ones it's unknown whether any of the giraffes from their last export are still alive. According to a 2010 YouTube video I saw, at that time they had one pure female Reticulated Giraffe left and it's very possible that she could have passed over the past three years.

Why SSP zoos continuously try to breed hybrid giraffe and pass the up for the real thing in cases where endangered (sub-)species are concerned remains beyond me.

For leopards (Amur leopard over any other ssp.) and lions (known lineage African lions) the more informed choice has been adopted.

Sadly, where carnivores are concerned in Europe we have to make up quite a bit of territory with zoo mix passed off as African lions (allthough EEP's exist for several leopard ssp. and the Asiatic lion).

In this article about where Calgary Zoo's elephants are moving, it mentions that Busch Gardens will be expanding their elephant exhibit. The exact quote is, "At the new facility, Spike will be able to have 24/7, year round outside access to space already four times larger than he has in Calgary and there are plans to expand the space."

Busch Gardens has entered into a deal with citypass that will allow people to visit it, Lowry Park Zoo, Florida Aquarium and Clear Water Marine Aquarium all for $119. I dont know if the deal is new to the other three places. The article wasnt clear about that.
