With the recent threads on past animals kept at various zoos i thought i would start one on animals that used to be kept at Blackpool Zoo. Here is a list of animals that were kept there from memory, correct me if i am wrong. White rhino ocelot thompsons gazalle babary sheep yak hog deer leaf cutter ants wallaroo humbolt penguins african grey parrot lady amherst pheasants
Bush-tailed Rock Wallaby Quokka American Bison Egyptian Fruit Bat Damara Zebra Arabian Oryx Alpine Chamois Chimpanzee Pygmy Tree Shrew Lesser Grey Mouse Lemur Abyssinian Ground Hornbill Blood Python European Otter Water Vole Gentoo Penguin Humboldts Penguin Are all species that have been kept at Blackpool off the top of my head
Forgot about the arabian oryx and damara zebra there used to be about a herd of nine i think. Where was the bison kept? wonder where the oryx and zebra went to?
Don`t remember either of them but i could be wrong, they also used to keep Matschie Tree Kangaroo as some where i have a very bad photo of one.
The oryx put down reali! how come they seam to have bred well there. Didn't the zoo used to specialise in australian animals and have wombats to ?
I do know why but would rather not say on here as i was told in confidence as it was a bit of a sensitive subject.

I believe the Damara Zebra bred in 1999, two of which are still at Colchester. Another past species which I believe (Don't quote me on this) went to Highland WP are Markhor.
I was recently given a copy of a Blackpool Zoo guide, with Ring-tailed Lemurs on the cover. Not sure of the date, possibly mid-1980s, but the first species shown inside is a Wombat. I didn't know they ever kept them. Also, Great Hornbills were kept around the same time.
Bison were behind the sea lion exhibit which did have both Patagonian and California sea lions at one time.

I have just noticed this thread and I hope this list below helps as I was sent a list from the zoo via e-mail about 18 months ago when I requested a list of previous species kept at the collection they responded as usual with a very detailed reply and I would like to thank them again for this I have also checked on zooterliste and some of the species mentioned on and on the e-mail are not on the zooterliste list. I would also like to thank zoogiraffe for helping me put a few names to old photographs I had from Blackpool also a thank you to Camel Leopard for confirming they used to have leaf cutter ants in the collection. Thanks again to Rob for the detailed response this helps fill in quite a few gaps in the dating of arrivals at the zoo (Doing a list the same as I did for Dudley date arrived date left) Here is the list sent below Aardwolf African Purple Swamphen Agile Gibbon Agile Wallaby Buffalo Andaman White-headed Myna Australian White Ibis Baer’s Pochard Bare-Faced Curassow Bengal Tiger Black Lemur Black Wildebeest Black-Tailed Waxbill Brahminy Starling Bristle-Crowned Starling Brown Dorcopsis Brown & Yellow Marshbird Burchell's Zebra Cape Sparrow Bottlenose Dolphin Tree Shrew Wombat Cuvier's Toucan Dark Tufted Capuchin D'Arnaud's Barbet Dusky Wallaby Eastern Mueller's Gibbon Mouflon Yellow-Bellied Toad Golden Tanager Grants Zebra Great Indian Hornbill Great Kiskadee Flycatcher Great-Billed Parrot Green Imperial-Pigeon Green Magpie Green-Backed Heron Green-Backed Tit Himalayan Monal Pheasant Indian Pitta Indian Roller Island Collared-Dove Jackass Penguin Kurrichane Thrush Madagascar Green-Pigeon Malayan Banded Pitta Matschie's Tree-Kangaroo North American Porcupine North-African Mastigure Northern Pintail Northwestern Carpet Python Orange Weaver Picui Dove Pygmy Marmoset Red-Bellied Macaw Red-Billed Blue Magpie Shetland Pony Short-Tailed Spotted Cuscus Siberian Chipmunk Siberian Thrush Silver-Throated Tanager Smooth-Backed Gliding gecko South American Sea Lion Southern White Rhinoceros Spot-billed Toucanet Spotted Imperial-Pigeon Turkomen Markhor Vicuna Wattled Crane Western Crowned-Pigeon White Woodpecker White-Headed Bulbul Yellow-Billed Stork I would like to hear from other members if they can remember any other species mainly the reptiles as again these seem to be missing from every list I have recieved Many thanks for the past help everyone.
Beluga? I find that unlikely. The current sealion pool was designed with dolphins in mind, but these were never kept in the enclosure.
Have to admit that one surprised me as well I wonder if somebody at the zoo was having a laugh when they sent the e-mail!!
