If you can't afford a group i'd recommend the Cunhinghams skink (Egernia cunninghami), they don't fare as well in groups as Gidgees and are slightly larger but they have quirky personalities.
I'm not sure if their readily available in the USA though but here in Australia they are quite common.

I'd also want a few other animals however, Australia prohibits the keeping of all exotic reptiles and amphibians (except the axolotl) and requires a basic liscence for natives yet it's totally fine to own a Ring necked parrot or a Blue and Gold Macaw with no licence.

Animals I want to own that are legal
    Spinifex Hopping Mice
    Cunninghams Skink
    Ackie Monitor
    Spotted Python

If Australia did allow exotic herps I would probably desire the following

    Leopard Gecko
    Amazon Milk Frog
    Fire Skink
    Tricolour Hognose Snake

Other than the herptiles an aviary would also be nice, preferably with pheasants, quail, small parrots and estirid finches.

If I had the initiative to get any animal I want, I would have ended up like Yoshinori Horii
