A live female Fernandina giant tortoise has been found.
The only other known specimen of Chelonoidis (Geochelone) phantasticus was found in 1906! The late explorer Eric Shipton, who searched on Fernandina (but probably called it Narborough) and extensively in the Himalayas, thought it was more likely that the yeti would be found than another tortoise on Fernandina.
The tortoise has been transferred to the breeding station on Santa Cruz and the search continues in the hope of finding another. See https://www.theguardian.com/environ...eved-extinct-for-100-years-found-in-galapagos
