The sloth in the exhibit second from the end is Argyle. He would be the one who is hanging, that small wooden platform at the highest point of his exhibit is his favorite spot. He is Jabba’s father and is very old. He is in the exhibit next to where the bats used to live, across from naked mole-rats.

If you saw the other sloth in a basket, it would be Jabba. He lives in the former mongoose lemur exhibit with a female, Latte. He was still up high, but not as high as Argyle. Jabba shares his exhibit with a female, Latte. I know it’s Jabba in the basket because back when they were in Small Mammal House, Jabba was always hanging lower in the branches than Latte. Latte would have been in one of the highest points.

 

I only saw three mini horses and Saki monkeys. I know before covid there were four of each, what happened to the fourth one? For the mini horses, I didnt see Dusty, the smallest one who is a paint color. All of them are quite young so I would be surprised if he passed. For the Saki monkeys i didn’t see the female, I saw all three males. The female is very old so I wouldn’t be surprised if she passed.

 

By second from the end I meant the other end, I always forget to include the parrot area.

For Saki, I only saw one. Maybe rotating by sex?

 

As far as I know, the family unit of saki monkeys is a geriatric mother-father pair and their two offspring, which are both males. I saw all three males but not the female. I don’t think they rotate by sex. On some other visits, I have seen less than four, but the female was never alone.

 

I used to always see all four horses, does the zoo only have three now? If so what happened to the fourth one?

 

No idea, I don't pay as much attention to the primates really. PECO was super busy , the only time I really stopped to look at anything was the saki exhibit since it didn't have any construction going on for once, but there were a lot of people in front of it.

I don't know about the horses, either. Could have been being worked with, health issues, etc.

 

Hello all,

Visited the Philly Zoo for the first time since childhood and it brought back so many great memories.

I wish everything was open and the social distancing in the primate reserve was non-existent, but a great day nonetheless.

One thing that was a little concerning, though, was the stress of the sloth bear. He was clearly stressed out and pacing back and forth at the front of his enclosure. Is this normal? I hope he gets a break

 

They just got a new, young bear a few weeks ago, so it's likely related to that.

 

All bears in zoos pace around. I learned that in school. It's just something bears in captivity do.

I emailed the zoo about some questions and this is some of what I heard.
-The male green anaconda passed away. He was very old but just died of natural causes. The female is all recovered and back on exhibit.

-The female white-faced Saki passed away. She was one of the oldest in the world.

-One of the mini horses got transferred to a farm, so the zoo only has three now.

 

If anyone flies by Philly Zoo again shortly could they try and find out whether any of the Galapagos tortoise females are actually egg laying kind. The new male Abrazzo is a proven breeder! Thanks beforehand.

Francois langur:

The Francois langur born April 5 is a female and has been named ‘Lei.’ Her parents are Chester and Ling (first time mother). This is the second success the zoo has had in breeding this species:

According to Facebook, the sailfin lizards are back on exhibit where the forest cobra used to be. I’m not sure about the black tree monitors, but before covid I heard that they would eventually return to their old home with the Trancavore tortoise. I’m not sure if that has happened yet, and why they are off stage. Also the reptile and bird houses might be reopening in a few weeks.

 

When the indoor exhibits open, I will return to the zoo. I don't know why the zoo has to be so prudish about opening the exhibits. Coronavirus existed before this pandemic, and I was at another zoo where masks were not enforced and most of the exhibits were open.

 

None too subtle with that attitude.

 

A lot of major zoos here have been more hesitant to reopen indoor areas than other institutions and businesses. I think it makes sense, personally; most zoos are primarily outdoors anyway, they probably won't lose a lot of visitors or revenue because of closed indoor exhibits, and I'd imagine keeping their animals and zookeepers safe is a higher priority for many of them than reopening exhibits. Philly Zoo is also a smaller denser footprint in a large dense city, so them being even more cautious than other zoos checks out logically.

It's been hard for me to hold off on visiting some big new zoos nearby because indoor exhibits I want to see are still closed, but personally I try to sympathize with the zoos' position and trust their judgement on when is right to reopen things. I like to think that when the day comes the long wait will make going into these buildings feel that much more satisfying
