A mother and son pair I believe. I hadn't realized they were are young as they are, I thought they were older! Looks like I have hope to still get there and see them still! ~Thylo
- The philly zoo orignally had a mother-son pair but the mother has since died and the other female came from san diego zoo where she was born.
Might be an idea to move them all to one collection, and try and set up a second group nearer to which ever collection stays in them!
You mean like they did with San Diego/Philadelphia? That then raises another question; Where would be better? Cologne, Philly or instead to a country in SE Asia?
More US zoos need to become more active in exhibiting and breeding rare and endangered primates ! Team Tapir223
I agree! The Western Lowland Gorilla, Golden Lion Tamarin, Sumatran Orangutan, and Bornean Orangutan are really the only ones you often hear about (though there are, obviously, several others). ~Thylo
- Yes that is so true. But if your looking for a good primate collection this is the place to go. They currently have 20 different species of primate on exhibit. This zoo also has good cat collections with 9 species and 4 bear species.
Why? Because we now know a lot more about langur biology and the heavy task of saving species is an onus upon us. Koeln Zoo was the only one still to breed in the western hemisphere ..., so that is why. Plus they have a direct connection to Vietnam via a rescue center AND a release program. Plus EPRC cannot deal on its own with the dirge and endless stream of rescued langurs and candidates still languishing in some hellhole ... on their own. Furthermore, several other European zoos are supporting the work of EPRC and may be in a position to participate in a renewed effort to maintain and breed some of the rarer Asian colobine primates.
I see your point regarding their efforts with the constant stream of langurs and gibbons being brought in but it's my understanding that douc's can't thrive outdoors in the Western hemisphere because of intolerance to bugs etc. I'm not saying outdoor enclosures are a necessity but it would be easier than building a large indoor enclosure. I would love to see more rare langurs in Europe but I'm not 100% certain we should be keeping doucs over here.
We Completely agree! Philly has a great collection and we enjoyed our visit and would love to visit again mostly based on this diverse primate collection. Team Tapir223
- The 2nd phase of the treetops trail is now open connecting to Peco Primate Preserve. Next year the zoo will connect the orangutan trail to the big cats. By 2017 the zoo would like to connect all the african hoofed animal exhibits on the east side of the zoo by a ground trail. A new waterhole space will also be built connected to the african trail. A major highlight is the zoos COO said that this last trail would allow for the return of elephants to the zoo . http://www.nytimes.com/2013/06/15/us/with-treetop-trail-philadelphia-zoo-opens-grounds-to-prowlers.html?_r=0
