I've upgraded the photo gallery software - and there's a couple of new features in this version (mostly usability features).

I've added a new gallery for Chester Zoo (as requested by some members) and have moved some of the photos into this forum (the ones which were clearly marked as being from Chester). If you have other photos from Chester Zoo which are not in the new forum, either move them to the new forum (I'm not sure if you can actually move your own photos ?) or point me to the photos and I'll move them for you.

If there are any other gallery topics (or forum topics for that matter) which would be useful - please let me know and I'll create them.

Thanks for that Sim! The changes look really good!

There are few of my Chester Zoo photos still in the european zoo gallery
    - Asian Plains
    - Mandrill at Chester Zoo
    - Rhinos at Chester Zoo
    - Komodo Dragon at Chester Zoo
    - Elephants at Chester Zoo
    - Indian Rhino (Patna) at Chester Zoo
    - Orang Utan at Chester Zoo (there's two of these)
    - Otters at Chester Zoo
    - Ring-Tail Lemurs at Chester Zoo
    - Red Panda at Chester Zoo
    - Dragons in Danger
    - Realm of the Red Ape
    - Realm of the Red Ape Model
    - Secret World of the Okapi
    - Spirit of the Jaguar
    - Tsavo Black Rhino House

Sim, if it helps, i could delete them and then re-upload them into the new gallery...

Actually I found a setting that should allow members to move their own photos ... so feel free to try moving them to the Chester gallery.

Let me know if you have any problems.

Many of the photos now appear to be different sizes, which do not neccesarily correspond to the original size of the picture. Why is this?

    D:confused:

Hi Sim, first of all i wanted to say what great website u have here, it must have been and still is hard work for you, so on behalf of everyone here thank you for all you have put into the site.
Could you perhaps change either the Port lympne or Howletts galleries into "other British zoo" gallery?

Yeah i think Kiang is right, a British Zoo gallery would be good and merge the Howletts and Port Lymohe ones into it.

Maybe it's because it's Friday evening, but I can't see any way to move my Chester photos to the new gallery. How can I do it?

I'm not exactly sure what you mean.

There are four versions of each photo now.

    1. the thumbnail that gets displayed in the galleries - this is now larger than previously

    2. the "medium" sized image which is created when then original image is more than 540px wide - this size was chosen because it fits the forum posts exactly.

    3. the "original" or "large" photo which is resized down to no more than 2500px in dimensions, or left in original format if it is larger.

    4. when you click on the medium photo in order to display the large photo, we now use a "lightbox" to display the large photo at the best size to fit your computer monitor. If you have an 800x600 resolution screen, it should be scaled down to fit, while if you have a higher resolution screen (and the image is large enough), you should see a higher res version. You need javascript enabled and a fairly recent broswer for this to work properly.

    Thanks for the kind words!

I've created a new UK/Ireland section in the gallery and moved the other galleries into there from the European section. I've also created an "Other UK/Ireland" gallery.

Thanks NZ Jeremy ... I must say I'm blown away by the discussions happening here now ... the growth has been fantastic over the past few months.

We now have more traffic coming from our UK members than we have from our Australian members ... and overall our 300 or so members here generate more traffic than one of my other forums which has over 3000 members !!

I'm really impressed with all the photos in the gallery too - that's becoming a fantastic resource.

Hmmm... I think it may be because a persons interest has already gone beyond casual (usually) before they search out a site such as this, I guess passionate people post a lot...

The larger the galleries get, the more members should result, (hopefully) when a google or yahoo search "results" on one of the images on your site and attracts attention...

    Was that other site invested..?

    Keep up the fantastic work..!

I was thinking the same thing recently. Even just since I joined, which wasn't too long ago, so many new experts (if I may use the term) and people with expert opinions have joined up. Its a fantastic site.
