    Olomouc is one of the Zoos with the longest history of breeding 'Barbary' Lions, perhaps unbroken since they started with 'Grade 1' Lions from the 1970's selective breeding attempts at recreating the species. So they should be of good 'quality' as far as resembling Barbaries goes, even if not the real thing.

    If I remember correctly, the mother of the male that Pilsen have just recieved is the female that Belfast handreared a couple of years back (her parents are ex-Port Lymphe) and then sent to one of the other Czech zoos before Olomouc took her and the male she'd be been paired up with whilst there

    I think you'll find all (?) the current Barbary Lions in the UK and Northern Ireland are related in some way. PL imported a new female from Madrid in October/November. Belfast's male Lion is the offspring of ex Longleat/Newquay male 'Kabir'. Kabir has offspring at Belfast, PL/Howletts and Longleat.

    Of which the Longleat ones,the females that Kabir bred with were generic zoo Lions,so the young are of no use to the Barbary Lion breeding program.

    Yes, that's correct. Kabir was imported to PL from Wellington (?) to breed with PL's female(s). He had cubs with one/two of the females and then moved to Longleat. He was mixed with 0.2 generic females, daughters of the infamous Mafui. Kabir had ten to fifteen cubs before being retired to Newquay where he later died.

    He has some offspring still left in the UK;

    Blackpool- 1.0
    Blair Drummond- 1.0
    Longleat- 0.5

    The rest are elsewhere in Europe, I know some where shipped to Germany and Denmark. Kabir's granddaughters, Kimya, Lunya and Nikita (All Ex Blackpool) are now at Longleat.

    There is a fresh pink-backed pelican chick beeing hand-reared at the zoo. Pilsen keeps 2 pairs of pink backed pelicans in an african themed aviary. One pair built a nest high in a tree and laid eggs, that had to be transfered to incubator due to comming winter.

    An Onilahy spider tortoise hatched few days ago. Hatched after 3/4-year long incubation, it is the 6th youngster of this species in 12 years.

    Indian rhino Manjula might give birth within the next 2-3 weeks. The zoo installed a webcam showing Manjula:

    Quite incredible how successful the EEP has been in the past couple of years with so many first time births at participating collections.

    Looks as though the keepers are trying to put the calf on to the Manjula's teat to feed as we speak all on the webcam linked above.

    Calf seems to be feeding on a regular basis this morning so the intervention clearly worked -and according to Jola's excellent website, the calf is now confirmed as a....
