Fishers released at Olympic National Park to boost species’ restoration

Federal, state, tribal and partner biologists released five fishers from Alberta, Canada, into the coastal forest near Lake Ozette on Nov. 5, the latest event in a nearly two decades-long project to restore the native species to Washington.

Fishers—a member of the weasel family roughly the size of a house cat that feeds on rodents, hares and even porcupines—were extirpated from Washington by the 1930s due to over-trapping, poisoning and fragmentation of their forest habitat.

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, the National Park Service, U.S. Geological Survey and the Conservation Northwest are cooperating to release the fisher species.

Protecting America’s Prairie and Wildlife by Expanding Heartland Ranch Nature Preserve

The Southern Plains Land Trust (SPLT) seeks to expand the Heartland Ranch Nature Preserve to 43,000 acres by 2024. This will enable restoration of bison and the endangered, endemic black-footed ferret in the region, as well as the conservation of other prairie species such as black-tailed prairie dog, burrowing owl, swift fox, and a myriad of endemic grassland breeding birds.

SPLT’s effort to restore the American Serengeti stands out as a singular effort in the southern Great Plains. No other organization is establishing wildlife refuges on such a large scale in the region. The establishment of Heartland Ranch Nature Preserve in 2015 and its subsequent expansion is a remarkable opportunity to protect uniquely North American flora and fauna native to the area.

Marmots settling in well to their new home on Ukraine’s Tarutino Steppe

A group of steppe marmots, translocated to the Tarutino Steppe in 2020, are acclimatising well to their new home. Their release into the wild, which is part of a long-term reintroduction programme, is helping to create a healthier, more functional steppe environment.

A group of eight steppe marmots (3 males, 5 females), translocated to the Tarutino Steppe in southwest Ukraine in the autumn of 2020, are acclimatising well to their new home. The animals, which are currently hibernating, are being closely monitored by the Rewilding Ukraine team. Prior to hibernation the animals were behaving normally, standing close to their burrows on their hind legs, turning from side to side, and squeaking loudly to check for other family members.

Waterfowl numbers increase in Takeo protected landscape area

Bird conservation groups in Cambodia have detected a significant increase in the number of waterfowl nests in the Boeung Prek Lapouv Protected Landscape Area in Takeo province for this year.

BirdLife International Cambodia on November 14 said the increase in the bird population was determined by a bird nest census – a new surveillance technique carried out in waterfowl breeding locations in the protected area in 2020 and 2021.

New 30,000 hectare expansion to Blue Mountains national park after years of negotiation

Adventures will soon be able to rock climb, camp and explore a new 30,000-hectare state conservation area on the western edge of the Blue Mountains with a $50 million state government package transforming the area.

The extension of the Gardens of Stone National Park near Lithgow will protect key areas of unique rock forms and endangered ecosystems. The area has been at the centre of negotiations for decades between government, conservation groups and Centennial Coal - the biggest mine in the region

Encouraging sign: First right whale calf of the season spotted off South Carolina

The first North Atlantic right whale calf of the new calving season was spotted last week just north of the entrance to the harbor in Charleston, South Carolina.

Philip Hamilton, a senior scientist at New England Aquarium's Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life, confirmed that a video shot by people on a sailboat Nov. 10 shows a mother/calf right whale pair. Hamilton, who manages the right whale photo identification catalogue at the aquarium's Kraus Marine Mammal Conservation Program, said the video was shot at a distance too great to determine the identity of the mother.

The sighting was an optimistic start to the calving season, which runs from December to May, typically in the ocean off Georgia and Florida.

Whooping cranes released in Vermilion Parish bring population to 73

In Vermilion Parish, the whooping crane population received a boost thanks to new introductions from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.

LDWF says they added three whooping cranes recently to its experimental population. The addition is part of the department's work to re-establish Louisiana's whooping crane population.

They say that four young cranes, hatched and reared at the Freeport-McMoRan Audubon Species Survival Center in New Orleans, part of the Audubon Nature Institute, were received at LDWF’s White Lake Wetlands Conservation Area (WCA) near Gueydan on Wednesday, November 10, 2021.

Biden Administration Acts to Restore Clean-Water Safeguards

The Biden administration has taken action to restore federal protections for hundreds of thousands of small streams, wetlands and other waterways.

The Biden administration took action Thursday to restore federal protections for hundreds of thousands of small streams, wetlands and other waterways, undoing a Trump-era rule that was considered one of that administration’s hallmark environmental rollbacks.

A rare and precious place:' 3,500-acres set aside for ‘Rainforest Reserve’ conservation near Cannon Beach

If you’ve ever traveled down the Oregon Coast south of Cannon Beach, chances are good you’ve wondered about the hulking range of mountains that rise almost directly above the beach.

Sometimes known as the Clatsop Alps, the mountains are literal islands in the sky, rising 3,000 feet above the ocean and home to a collection of plants and animals that evolved here and exist nowhere else on Earth.

“The mountains are the backdrop to everything on the North Coast and just kind of dominate for miles around,” said Katie Voelke, executive director North Coast Land Conservancy (NCLC). “What people often don’t know is that they’re one of the most geologically and ecologically remarkable areas in the world.”

Hidden in plain sight, the endangered button wrinklewort makes a revival

As trains rattle past, daisies are pushing up through the soil on three vacant blocks next to the Sunbury line.

But far from a euphemism about death, these particular daisies embody a rare survival story.

So precious are the small plants, the state government does not want their location revealed and they are secured behind 2-metre high fences.

The brilliantly named button wrinklewort, an endangered wildflower, exists in fewer than 30 known locations across Victoria, New South Wales and the Australian Capitol Territory.

Defenders Applauds Biden Administration’s Move to Protect Roadless Areas in Tongass National Forest

"Protecting the Tongass is an important and historic step in recognizing the role of our forests in fighting today’s biodiversity and climate crises. We look forward to working with the Biden administration to similarly protect older forests and wildlands across the nation."

Patrick Lavin, Alaska Policy Advisor for Defender's of Wildlife.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced that next week it will propose reinstating the national Roadless Area Conservation Rule in the Tongass National Forest in Southeast Alaska. The move would restrict development on roughly 9.3 million acres in North America’s largest temperate rainforest.

First kiwi chick born on Kaitake Ranges in Taranaki just months after birds reintroduced

Just months after kiwi were reintroduced into Taranaki’s Kaitake Ranges, a pair of the birds have successfully hatched a chick, stunning conservationists.

“It's hard to wrap in a few words just how significant this is,” Taranaki Mounga Project manager Sean Zieltjes said.

“We didn’t expect to be able to achieve this fast. It’s testament to the commitment of the community getting stuck in out there.”

Jaguars in Mexico are growing in number, a promising sign that national conservation strategies are working
    • The first surveys to count jaguars in Mexico revealed a 20% increase in the population from 2010 to 2018, up to 4,800 animals.
    • Conservation strategies targeted the most urgent threats to jaguars, and prioritized protecting wildlife preserves and natural corridors.
    • Mexico’s National Alliance for Jaguar Conservation united the government, people living near protected areas, and the private sector in plans to conserve the iconic species.
The jaguar population in Mexico increased by about 800 animals from 2010 to 2018, according to the first two censuses of the elusive carnivores ever conducted in the country. The news confirms that Mexico’s national strategy to protect jaguars is working, researchers reported recently in the journal PLOS One

NOAA looks to a new marine sanctuary off California

A public comment and scoping process is opening on a proposed 7,000-plus-square mile national marine sanctuary off 156 miles of California coast, to start planning for ecosystem protection that will dovetail with offshore wind energy development in the Morro Bay region, according to Biden administration officials.
