We have sadly lost one of our dearest members at the Zoo, "Rafiki" our 27 year old Zebra passed very quickly on a sunny afternoon. He will be sadly missed by many as he has been the "ICON" of our Zoo for so long. He had struggled this winter but with all the extra treats such as Molasses, baleage and super juciy grass he just didnt bounce back to his normal 100%. I will miss him so much as I am sure alot of Taranaki folk will too. Thanks

Sorry to hear of your loss, Zebras are becoming less common in the region

Thanks ... its sad to think we wont have another Zebra, but unless I win Lotto that will be the case. We knew he would pass on one day but really had my fingers crossed for another summer with him. Part of Zoo life is the death ... but heads up and carry on as we still have a park full of animals that will always want my full attention :)

It would appear Zebra's are on the slide again in the region and becoming somewhat inbred as well, maybe some of our larger ZAA zoos should import a few more before their time runs out
