According to the zoos instagram page, they now have a new musk ox calf called Gunnar, who was born earlier this summer!
Ranua unfortunately announced the death of their Pallas Cat, Mortti. He was suffering ailments related to the old age. They are hoping of getting a new Pallas Cat, but there are no anything definite at the moment.
Ranua has announced the loss of their stud male finnish forest reindeer, Sampo, due to old age. He had had an important role when providing new gene flow into zoo population and into rewilding program as well. But on the bright side. The zoo has got an entirely new specie: amur leopard cat. A female, Maia, was transported there from Korkeasaari zoo.
It´s nice that zoos still hold on amur leopard cats. I was afraid few years back they will wither away because one zoo after another was phasing them away.
Three young Finnish forest reindeers were tranported from Ranua zoo in November. Now they have announced that one of them, Castor, has gotten his own harem in Nordens Ark, Sweden. Other two has not been identified further (yet), but that they too are in European zoos.
Ranua announced loss of their musk ox breeding male Iisakki. He was suffering old age. The zoo will miss him dearly as Iisakki was a big personality.
