This seems as good a place as any to ask a question to all those bird experts. Is it normal for blackbirds to feed on fungi - I certainly cannot find any reference to them doing so at all. Asking because on going out into my garden this morning, I found a female blackbird pecking at and swallowing pieces of small orange toadstools growing in the lawn. I've never seen such behaviour before.
An event one hopes is rare - this happened very close to where I live, luckily my Christmas Tree is a real one! 'Tiger snake tinsel' found on Melbourne Christmas tree
It surtainly isn't part of their normal diet but I've seen Blackbirds and other thrushes also eating fungi. Also seen it in Magpies and other crows.
