Thank you Rob. We went to Reaseheath on a school visit back in the last century and it's been high on my list ever since.

Do you know (roughly) what non-domesticated species they currently hold?

Crikey, that's an impressive list (a far greater holding than I realised). Thank you all, but Rob especially for the sterling work.

As an OT aside, does anyone know when Chinchilla lanigera picked up the "Long-tailed" moniker? That must be a fairly recent addition to its name.

I've only ever known it as either Chinchilla or Long-tailed Chinchilla SMR. I can't tell you when I first heard the name long-tailed.

they have always been called long-tailed chinchillas in order to distinguish them from the other species, the short-tailed chinchilla C. brevicaudata (= C.chinchilla) although this has sometimes been considered a subspecies of the former. However in common parlance the name "chinchilla" is often used without a qualifier because only laniger is commonly kept as a farm or pet animal

ISIS calls Chinchilla laniger the long-tailed chinchilla, but uses the scientific name of Chinchilla chinchilla for the short-tailed chinchilla.

C.chinchilla predates C.brevicaudata but it's a long time since I saw this name in use.

Forgot to say it mentions 'Guess the weight of the tortoise', 'face your phobia' and 'Lemur and meerkat feeding', keeper talks, quizzes, face painting and raptor meet and greet. You can also visit the Maize Mazes.:)

I think it might be an idea to get a clarification on the days that the zoo is open before anyone goes along. In Zoogiraffe's photo, the banner says weekends only:

    Hi SMR,
So it does, maybe they're behind schedule? The advert definitely says daily from July 17 to Sept 6, but like you suggest best to check before setting off!!!:)

Some clarification thanks to Reaseheath's programme administrator at the animal management centre.

The Reaseheath zoo will be open from 31st July to 30th August, 11am to 6pm. A joint ticket for the zoo and the Maize Maze will be available, and zoo visitors can use the Maize Maze car park.

Hi, just to point out that some stuff on the above list is incorrect, especially the birds in case anyone is interested.
    There is no macaw in the collecetion and as far as I am aware the quail are californian. The following also do not feature in the collection;
    Red Jungle Fowl
    Blue Peafowl
    Crimson Rosella
    Eastern Rosella
    Maroon-bellied Conure

A couple of things not listed are a new African Eagle Owl and a European Buzzard. The rodents (rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, mice, degu, voles, chinchillas are not likely to be on show as they are housed in a different area of the college.

Opening still going ahead on 31st, was delayed due to building works.

Do you mean an opening day, or the opening of this new entrance? As I am planning a visit and am unsure of when the collage is open? Any open days in August?

The zoo is opening to the public every day throughout August, think the hours are 11 - 4.30.
