@Kifaru Bwana points out that many overseas readers will be unable to read the link, something I was not aware of. Let me summarize key points. By 2021 the zoo will open a new front entry plaza that will include a new Chilean flamingo exhibit (the flamingos are currently in the back of the zoo). By 2022 a new Asia area will open in land that is currently part of the park but not the zoo (along the zoo's western edge). It will include: Malayan tiger (with underwater viewing, 14,000 square feet) pheasants (more than one species) siamang muntjac (no species listed, but likely Reeve's) sloth bear sand cat fruit bat (no species listed) reptile house (with "snakes, lizards, insects and a Komodo dragon") In following years, phase 2 and 3 will focus on the existing Africa and South America sections.
@AD, Thank you very much for elaborating and filling us in greater detail the newest changes and some of the exciting upcoming plans for expansion. Much appreciated!
The zoo announced via Instagram that two turaco chicks hatched in the Flight Connection aviary. Reid Park Zoo on Instagram: “Well, hello! The Flight Connection aviary just gained two new residents! These turaco chicks are 19 days old and are currently about the…”
Visited this zoo for my first time this past weekend. The elephants were all together and very active while I was there. I like the exhibit for the most part, but if the elephants are not in the large yard to the right of the elephant barn, it is really hard to see them. I thought it was a nice small zoo.
Simone was euthanized yesterday. Reid Park Zoo announces 23-year-old Jaguar was euthanized due to age-related health issues
Not surprising considering her advanced age. I wonder if they will get a new jaguar or replace it with another species?
The zoo will host a preview screening of the Lion King remake. Reid Park Zoo hosting special screening of Disney's 'The Lion King'
To clarify, the screening is not being held on zoo grounds - it is in a regular movie theater. However the screening will be preceded by a presentation from zoo staff and the money from the (higher priced than usual) tickets will benefit lion conservation.
Coincidentally I was at the zoo yesterday and posted two photos of the renovated exhibit in the gallery. I believe the new jaguar will be the standard morph (yellow with black rosettes) unlike the previous two that were black/melanistic.
I saw this on the zoo website at 3pm, the zoo closes at 4pm, so I got my stuff together and went over there for the last half hour. Unfortunately the keeper had just put away the jaguar for the night. For those who don't want to click on the article, it is a ten year old female jaguar from Akron Zoo (Ohio).
In post 16 of this thread I reported that the article says sand cats will be part of the Asia expansion. According to the current plan on the zoo website (and confirmed today by a senior staff member) sand cats will not be coming and are instead being replaced by fishing cats.
