On the 10th October 2008, one of the two white rhino females at Copenhagen Zoo, Minna, was artificially insaminated. She is the second female in captivity ever to have had this procedure.

Minna is 14 years old and came from Pilanesberg National Park in South Africa to Copenhagen Zoo in 2006, along with anotherc cow and a young bull. Three vets from IZW performed the insamination along with the vet from Copenhagen Zoo.

Budapest Zoo has started an financed this project. It was also in Budapest Zoo that the first calf created by artificial insamination was born earlier this year (as you all probably know ;)).

The spermdonor is a wild bull from South Africa. The male at Copenhagen is still too young to breed, so the Zoo decided that they wanted to help the research in this project. Hopefully we will have a young healthy calf in 16 months. Fingers crossed!
