Well a paper one anyway! A rather bizarre link my friend emailed me! Rhino Made Of Papier Mache In Japan Zoo Drills 'Attacks' Keepers | Strange News | Sky News
they seem to perform this same drill every year (perhaps only with the rhino, or perhaps only the rhino is interesting enough to attract international attention as "weird"). Anyway, here's a 2009 thread about the same drill: http://www.zoochat.com/241/escaped-rhino-drill-71175/ which apparently wasn't new then either!
I just did some basic Google searches, and it seems it is an annual event (or biannual in some reports) which has become a popular attraction in its own right, especially amongst school-children apparently. Animals that have featured include rhinos, orangutans, zebras, tigers and lions (and probably polar bears but I didn't search exhaustively).
I have actually just cried laughing - especially the guy who panics and faints (or is possibly tasered by his mate - it's hard to tell) :O) it's a female rhino I think as it has blue eyeshadow and lovely lash enhancing mascara and although I've seen guys wearing both eyeshadow and fake lashes I have to admit it's not an everyday occurance!
The quirkiness of the Japanese is unrivaled! I love how detailed the rhino was, right down to ears that swivel. I seriously think though they're doing it as a show to attract visitors and news attention. How could flimsy nets and sticks possibly stop a charging 2-tonne rhino?!
apparently other Japanese zoos are doing the drill as well, because the Ueno Zoo one is so popular with the visitors. Back to Ueno, here is the orangutan escape drill with eight photos (I have to say the schoolchildren don't look like they enjoyed it!): Photo Gallery: Orangutan Escape Simulated in Tokyo Zoo - SPIEGEL ONLINE - News - International
