Australia Zoo - About Us - Zoo News - First Queensland Rhino Baby Born Today I didn't even know they were trying to breed rhino's!!! Mother is Caballe from Auckland Zoo.
Beat me to it. Caballe was pregnant when she left New Zealand so Australia Zoo can't really take the credit
Yes - she was impregnated in New Zealand, but it's still wonderful news and must be a great boost for the keepers after their shaky start with this species. Arriving so close to the Easter holidays won't hurt either
One of my friends is a Rhino keeper, and I found out he was there for the birth. LOL He asked me how I knew - uh it's on the website AND FB page.
This really is a historic zoo birth for Queensland. Rhino babies really are adorable and it is good to see mother and daughter doing so well. Hopefully Australia zoo's Rhino bad luck is over and this is the beginning of a strong healthy Queensland herd.
A bit late, but great news!!! Hopefully this is the start of many to follow and Australia Zoo can become a great breeder of the species.
Yes but I am saying that hopefully they can breed with their animals and form a breeding facility. It should be more so a congrats to Hamilton Zoo, their male is doing his job and the keepers would be proud!!! EDIT: Not the dreaded public naming comp! Some 12 year old rich kid could pay $1000 for the naming rights and call the calf Lucy or Sally or Jenny. It is a real shame, and I think the Hamilton keepers should get the right.
Sorry UMAG - my comment was at Briz's post - i don't think it really should be considered that historic when all they did was import a pregnant female
Sorry about the confusion! Too true, and that is why I think Hamilton should get naming rights, all Australia Zoo did was import her and wait for the baby to come.
I agree but hopefully in the future they will. This is Caballes fourth calf, two male and two female so would she be considered for another breeding? And I wonder if Australia zoo intend to obtain another female.
The winner of the Ebay auction has spoken and the winning name is... (drum roll!) Savannah! And the baby rhino's name is... | Warwick News | Local News in Warwick | Warwick Daily News The African safari area is supposed to ready for September but I will believe it when it's open and completed..... lol
Not my prefered name (but that is what you get when you auction animal names on Ebay!), but still not the worst that could come out of it.
Another calf due in April 2013, this time to "Inyeti" Australia Zoo - About Us - Zoo News - Australia Zoo has a big baby on the way!
As far as I know, Ganini (DJ) the expected father is the only one of the three males that have been housed with the females.
I was about to ask which of the males was the father, thanks for suppling that info. So many times it is not mentioned
