The ancestry of the calf is interesting, bringing together the Werribee and Dubbo bloodlines. It will also be a scond generation born int he region, on both sides.
    1. The calf

    Parents
    1.Ganini
    2.Inyeti

    Grandparents
    1.Leeroy(?)
    2.Letaba

    3.Thomas
    4.Aluka

Aluka was one of the females to have died recently. As far as I can tell
This future calf and its parents will be the only living desendants of all four of the grandparents.

Not to doubt you but are you sure that Leeroy is DJ's father? I thought it might be Kapamba but I could be wrong seeing Kapamba is kept with the females for the past few years while Leeroy and Umgana are either kept separate or rotated?

In a newspaper article from his birth the father was quoted as being 'Lee', hence why I think it was leeroy. If I'm wrong I would be very happy to be corrected.

Oh ok, I didn't know that he bred. Werribee mentions on their website that he is shy around the females and I know he is kept separate from them and Kapamba is in with the females so that is why I thought he was Ganini's father.

I need to apologise. I have just found out that Ganinis father is in fact Umgana.

No need to :). I had a suspicion tho that Leeroy couldnt be the father as I believe that he has never been introduced, or if so, never bred to the females.

It goes to show that you can't always rely on newspaper articlles.
It is a shame that Leroy is shy and his genes won't be added to the pool of founders. (Artificial insemination?)

Yeah it is seeing that he was part of the original pair at Werribee (the other one is the female Lataba, still there) but never managed to breed with any of the wild caught females.

Yeah, unfortunately she did also with the one born last year, but what I mean that Leeroy has never bred with the wild caught females. Sisi's last calf was born to Kapamba.

On the news tonight there was a story about the African Savannah being 1 year old. It mentioned that there would be two rhino calves born next year.
