SINCE the Gatton-Clifton Road closed in mid-December last year, Darling Downs Zoo owner Steven Robinson said he has new baby marmosets, a new male pelican and a new idea for a second Range crossing.

All access to the zoo was cut off from the east after flooding caused landslides along the road, which runs between the New England Highway near Clifton all the way through to Gatton.

Mr Robinson said not only did the extensive road closure affect his business badly, it also sent plenty of extra heavy vehicles through Toowoomba.

“The closure has thrown up a situation where I realised that this road is probably more crucial than we thought as a corridor to the east,” Mr Robinson said.

“With the floods we had the Range cut off, Cunningham’s Gap closed off, the Esk-Hampton road just gone and Blackbutt was cut as well.

“Main Roads and the Department of Transport already own this transport corridor and the gradient over the range is a lot less steep than at Cunningham’s Gap or the Toowoomba Range.

“It would still cost a lot, but nowhere near the cost of putting in tunnels or starting a new bypass from scratch and it’s actually a pretty logical option.”

He laughed that there was a selfish side to the suggestion as well, with permanent upgrades to the road meaning it would be weatherproof, preventing further extended closures of the zoo due to weather events.

Darling Downs Zoo is officially open for business and in desperate need of visitors to offset nearly two months with no guests.

Mr Robinson said there were plenty of babies born during their isolated period and regular animals have been missing human interaction.

The zoo is located on the Clifton-Gatton Road about three minutes drive from the New England Highway.
