Oh no! I'm hoping to get to Chester this year and was hoping to see the bears out this time. What sad news! I bet Tim will be gutted after they did so well to get another male bear so quickly. I wonder if the obvious will now happen and they'll get one of the females from South Lakes???
Seeing as how South Lakes have four females in a smaller enclosure, I can't see why that didn't happen previously...
Very sad news indeed Hopefully they will be able to source another female soon, and I hope this doesn't mean their too caution when mixing another pair.
Absolutely. Very tragic news. Also very suprising , Spectacled Bears are not known generally for their aggressiveness toward each other or keepers for that matter , they are usually quite reserved in character. Whilst moving a female from South Lakes seems the obvious choice , it may not be the case , in reality there is a great deal of "politics" involved with certain zoos ,so time will tell. Z.
I hope the zoo politics doesn't prevent another female being sourced as soon as possible. AFAIK, the South Lakes bears were allocated to them by the EEP so it should be possible to reallocate one or two should they so wish. Seems a lot more logical to me(genetics notwithstanding) when there are four females so near, than having to get another one from Europe.
so sad just as i thought chester were getting back on track with the bears. i would very much like to see this this species bred in chesters fantastic enclosure and do hop the get a female soon
We were there on that day, and only saw one bear briefly in the enclosure. I don't know which one it was, as I don't know the facial patterns of the pair. We saw it in the morning. How sad for Chester!
Brilliant news! Fingers crossed that this pair will finally give Chester the long awaited cubs in the near future.
