It feels like an odd choise to me. European zoos are choked with sea lions, presumably its getting hard to relocate males to suitable homes at this point. Wouldnt the huge river system make for a pretty nice male group? That, and Im guessing sea lions interact with the ferry more than the seals.

Though the park focusses mostly on african species so a Californian Sea Lion would not fit that well. That said Harbour Seals are too northern (but idk).

The reason (I think) they are no longer doing the ferry river is cause of the danger of the animals hitting the ferry.

Longleat has a boat ride through their Half Mile Lake and their sea lions do just fine, (they even cohabitate with two hippos!). Regardless, I'm interested to see how seals would fare, however given the African theme, I'm surprised they didn't go with South African fur seals.

The original plan was to keep Californian sea lions and South African fur seals. As fur seals are more difficult to train, the idea was that they could learn by 'copying' the sea lions. A male fur seal was housed with the sea lions but left after two years. From what I've heard, it proved difficult to get female South African fur seals.

The harbour seal that lived alone in the safari park was joined at the end of November by another seal named Seabert. Seabert came from AquaZoo Leeuwarden, where he was born this year.

At the Beekse Bergen a Rothschild giraffe (Beekse Bergen calls them Nubian giraffes) was born. It is a female and has been given the name Shanna. Because of the weather conditions she stays with her mother Theluji in the indoor enclosure. Guests can visit the indoor enclosure one hour a day.

Juvenile Dani was euthanized today. Okapi mother Neyla contracted a utter infection, which prevented the calf from drinking. Despite attempts from keepers to feed him, his situation wouldn't improve. :(

In August a Spotted thick-knee (Burhinus capensis) hatched, according to the zoo this is the first time that they bred this species (but ZTL states 2018 as first breeding success).

This year 4 Spotted hyenas (Crocuta crocuta) were born.

A male Grant's zebra (Equus quagga boehmi) was born in August

I think I recall seeing thick-knee chicks a few years ago.

Some news from the Dutch zoo magazine "De Harpij":

    - A new breeding male has arrived for the blue wildebeest.
    - From Usti lad labem a 1.0 De Brazza's monkey arrived.
    - The 2.0 white-belted black-and-white ruffed lemurs moved to AquaZoo Leeuwarden, so the species is out of the collection.
    - From Belgium, 4.1 black kites and 2.1 yellow-billed kites arrived. The latter is a new species for Beekse Bergen.

Since this week the male De Brazza's monkey (Cercopithecus neglectus) can be seen on the former white-cheeked gibbon island.
